Schools want talks on race

CHAPEL HILL -- Come in. Have a seat. Make yourself at home. Get uncomfortable. That's what Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools want parents to do. The school system wants parents of all colors and races to have a frank discussion about race and how it affects every student's education.

The achievement gap is worse in high-performing districts such as Chapel Hill-Carrboro's than in low-performing districts, said education consultant Glenn Singleton, executive director of the Pacific Educational Group, which the school district hired to
ead the discussion.

"Black and brown students are outperformed here by neighboring districts with less of a cachet," he said.

Singleton addressed a group of about 50 community leader
s Friday during a discussion of race relations and education, the s
econd of four Equity and Excellence forums
, and the ongoing Minority Achievement Plan. The plan's goal is to eliminate the achievement gap between white and Asian students on one end and black and Hispanic students on the other.

Just one Hispanic representative attended the event. Although the district made performance data available for whites and African-Americans, it did not offer information about Hispanic student performance.

Community representatives broke into small groups to discuss ways to convince parents, especially white parents, that the achievement gap negatively affects their children as well.

Being aware of differences helps students prepare for a global work environment where no
t everybody has the same set of assumptions or had the same upbringing, said Joal Hall Broun, a Carrboro alderman.

Some white parents have resisted change because they
fear academic standards will be sacrificed for equity.

The community leaders sought wa
ys to encourage white people to support the program and to convince them that a focus on minority achievement would not lower the bar for students excelling in the current system.

Ideas included distributing a fact sheet that clearly outlines what Equity and Excellence is, and having racially mixed dinners where white, black, Hispanic and Asian families would eat together.

I don't think having dinner with Mr Charley and Mr Wong is going to work. I suggest you make your li'l skewl niqqers do their homework for starters and see if that helps.

What these diversity whores really want is for the white kids to spend their evenings watching rap music on MTV rather than studying, so they will be as unprepared for the tests and their negro counterparts.

The solution is simple: make a school for the mud races and another for the white kids. Then, all the mud races will be equally poor performers, but at least they won't feel bad.
