Con men posing as SLED agents trick Orangeburg residents out of thousands of dollars

(Orangeburg) Dec. 22, 2004 - A scam in Orangeburg county involving two men posing as police officers is costing two residents thousands of dollars.

The Orangeburg Public Safety Department says two people have posed as SLED agents, and taken elderly victims for thousands of dollars.

Chief Wendell Davis of the Orangeburg Public Safety Department says the first incident happened on Gue Street November 23rd. Investigators say two men posing as SLED agents came to an older woman's house, and said they were investigating her bank account.

Chief Davis says the men wer

e, "saying there's some kind of problem with the account," and that they even said "that they're invest
igating the bank itself." Davis says the men told a story about investigating possible counterfeit money at the bank.

Chief Davis says the men convinced the woman to withdraw $1,900 from her account, and took off with it.

Something similar happened on Whitaker Street late last week, although police are not sure the two cases are related due to the descriptions of the men. On Whitaker Street, the two men came to the home of an elderly woman.

Chief Davis says that in that incident, "They presented themselves as members of the local police department and said the Police Chief had sent them over to have this investigation."

Davis says the scam artists convinced the woman to drive with them to her bank and withdraw $2,800.

If you have information on the two men pictured, police ask that you call the Orangeburg Department o

blic Safety.

As a result of the incidents, the Orangeburg police are asking people to be cautious. For anyone who answers the door to find a police off
icer, there are a few things to be aware of.

A police officer would never ask you to withdraw money from your account.
Safety experts say you should always ask for photo identification and a badge.
And finally, trust your intuition. If you're unsure about something, call the police.
