Teacher's Race Impacts Black Students' Scores on Standardized Tests
Thomas S. Dee, an assistant professor of economics at Swarthmore College, has just published a study showing that black students in elementary school do better on standardized tests when they have a black teacher. White students in elementary school also perform better on tests when they have a white teacher. The study, published in the Spring issue of Education Next, found that black students who had a black teacher scored 3 percent higher on the Stanford Achievement Test than black students who had a white teacher
Black students who had a black teacher for two or more consecutive years scored even higher.
Dee hypothesizes that black students with a black teacher may have a more effective role model boosting

student's confidence and self-esteem. Lear
ning may be easier in an environment where the black student has a teacher he or she trusts and respects.
Nationwide, 17 percent of all public school students are black but only 8 percent of all public school teachers are black. The study's results show that recruiting more black teachers for the nation's public schools may help close the racial achievement gap.
