Former Jamaican dentist Junious C. Morgan's decision to return to the United States will cost him 15 years in prison.

U.S. District Judge William H. Barbour Jr. of Jackson recently sentenced Morgan on 15 counts involving drug distribution and money-laundering charges dating back nearly 20 years.

In 1986, Morgan fled while a federal jury in Jackson was deliberating his fate on the charges.
Morgan said he was goin

g to dinner but never came back for the jury verdict. He was convicted in absentia.
n
Morgan was arrested in his native Jamaica and brought back to the United States in 1987 under an agreement that he be sentenced on one of 16 charges of which he was convicted.

The deal also called for him to be deported to Jamaica after serving his sentence.

Last year, Morgan was arrested in Miami attempting to re-enter the country after using fake identification.

Federal prosecutors said Morgan's actions violated the agreement, allowing Morgan to be sentenced on the remaining charges.

But Morgan's attorney, Robert S. Smith of Jackson, said he should have been released.

"The extradition agreement said he could only be sentenced on the one count," Smith said.

Smith said
he is app
eali
ng the sentence to the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals.

:pity:

Smith said the only charge, if any, his client should have faced would have been re-entering the United States, which would lead to him being deported.

Morgan initially was brought to Mississippi to stand
trial for failure to appear, but Barbour dismissed the charge on a speedy trial violation, Smith said.

"They couldn't get him on that so they decided to sentence him on the remaining charges," Smith said.

The remaining charges for which Morgan was sentenced included conspiracy to import 10,000 pounds of marijuana, two counts of concealing drug profits from the Internal Revenue Service, conspiring to conceal drug profits and using a telephone in a drug deal.

Federal authorities said when Morgan was ap
prehended last year
in Miami
, they believed he had been in and out of this country on several occasions.

U.S. Assistant Attorney Ruth Morgan, no relationship to Junious Morgan, has said Morgan violated the agreement, opening himself up to the sentencing.

Memo to Morgan:you pushed it too far and you got busted. Idiot.
