Jun 1, 2005 3:58 pm US/Central

CHICAGO (AP) A 24-year-old man accused of gunning down another man during a dispute over a basketball game at a West Side Chicago YMCA was ordered held without bond today.

Markell Lane is charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of 19-year-old Donte Thomas. He was denied bond during a hearing in Cook County Circuit Court.

Prosecutors say Lane and Thomas began quarreling while playing a game of basketball. The men were teammates and Lane had accused Thomas of hogging the ball to help the other team win. After they lost, Lane left the gym and armed himself with a 45-caliber handgun.

Authorities
say he then returned to the YMCA and shot Thomas three times.
