Police arrest accused rapist on his first day out of jail

(MOBILE, Ala.) June 13 -- Mobile police say a 24-year-old man released from jail on Tuesday allegedly raped a 73-year-old Mobile woman on his first day out and was arrested and jailed by police after leaving the scene in the victim's vehicle.

James Maurice Broadhead was charged with Rape First Degree and Theft of Property First Degree Tuesday and transported to Mobile County Metro Jail. Broadhead raped a woman inside a house in the 4000 block of Holleman Drive about 4 p.m. and left the scene in the victim's car. Police apprehended the subject in the vehicle about 4:45 p.m. at Virginia and Broad Streets.

Broadhead had been released from Escambia County Jail earlier after serving about eight months on one or more assault charges. The assault charges were committed by Broadhead during the time he was serving in Holman Prison from August 2002 to his release in October 2006. He was serving a 20-year prison sentence, split to serve five years, on a Robbery First degree charge.

Upon his release from jail, Broadhead was serving five years probation on the robbery charge.
