Testimony began Monday in the trial of a man accused of raping as many as six women in a five-year period.

Thirty-six-year-old Christopher Baker has pleaded not guilty to rape, kidnapping, aggravated sodomy and a number of other charges.

Prosecutors say Baker used various techniques to get women in his car and then, they say, he would attack them.

In court today, one of his alleged victims, now 22-years-old, te
tified how she was attacked when she was 18.

Defense Had Argued That Sex Was Consensual

ATLANTA -- A Fulton County judge on Tuesday declared a mistrial in the case of a man accused of being a serial rapist whom prosecutors had argued sexually assaulted, kidnapped and beat several women over a five-year period.

The mostly male jury had found Christopher Baker, 36, guilty of four counts of theft but deadlocked after deliberating for four days on 18 other counts that had been filed against him.

As a resu
t, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Alford J. Dempsey Jr. declared a mistrial.
Prosecutors are going to retry the man, and court officials began the process to select a new jury because the defense fi
led a request for a speedy trial.

Baker was accused of a series of sexual assaults, which
prosecutors said began in May 1998 and lasted until October 2002. He was facing a sentence of life imprisonment.

Assistant District Attorney Gayle Abramson argued during the trial that Baker was a sexual predator who preyed on defenseless women. Six women testified against the man, and prosecutors presented evidence from DNA that confirmed that sexual intercourse had occurred.

In her closing arguments, Abramson told the jury that Baker deserved jail time for what he did. She described him as an "evil, manipulative and malevolent criminal."

"Tell him you agree that he is scum of the earth," she said to the jury, made up
of eight men and four women, during closing arguments. "Tell him you don't want him around in your neighborhoods anymore."

But the defense argued during the trial that Ba
ker had consensual sex with the women who were prostitutes who concocted the rape story because he refused to pay them or took the money back from them afte
r sex.
Baker testified on his own behalf and said he did not do what prosecutors alleged he did.

Baker's relatives came to his defense, saying they believed the women lied on the stand.

"It's just all about a conviction it's not about the truth," said Kimberly Baker, his sister. "And we want the truth."

Marjorie Richardson, his aunt, said the women had an ax to grind.

"He did do a scumful thing and that was he didn't pay them," she said. "He admitted he had sex with them (but) he took the money back."

Philadelphia Police Link Eighth Attack To Serial Rapist
Recent DNA Tests Showed One Man Responsible For Series Of Attacks

PHILADELPHIA -- Police have linked an eighth rape to a man who has been attacking women since 2002 in neighborhoods in North and South Philadelphia.

Police say the attack occurred in February, but they are giving few details.

Police announced last week that DNA analysis had indicated that six previously unlinked rapes were committed by the same man. On Thursday, police announced that a seventh attack had been lin
ed to the man, and they indicated there could be more matches.

Police said that the attacker's DNA is not in any criminal database and that investigators do not know who he is.

Serial Rapist Sketch Released

Police believe the man is responsible for at least eight sexual assaults in Philadelphia.

Investigators describe him as a man with a medium to dark complexion with a thin build and clean-shaven.

Authorities say he has some missing and possibly crooked teeth

Police also believe the attacker may have had a job as a parking attendant in the area of 12th and Locust Streets.

He is accused of attacking women since 2002 in neighborhoods in north and south
Philadelphia.

The most recent linked attack happened last February.

DNA evidence has linked all eight rapes.

Police say the
DNA of the attacker has not shown up in any criminal database, so investigators do not know who he is. But police say they have one clue, a possible name.

"We believe this male has used the name of James as a first name. This maybe fictitious or a real name but it repeats itself to the degree that I wanted to put this out," said Capt. John Darby.

Serial Rapist Receives 10 Back-to-Back Life Sentences

ATLANTA -- A former Atlanta police official said a serial rapist could have been caught earlier if police had done a better job investigating the attacks.

Christopher Baker, 37, tried to blame the six victims before his sentencing Friday, saying they were prostitutes he fleeced, but didn't rape.

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Alford Dempsey Jr. sentenced Baker to 10 back-to-back life sentences, plus 119 years after Baker was convicted of 18 charges, including rape, kidnapping, aggravated sodomy and robbery by force.

"That's every day I could find," Dempsey said, explaining he imposed the maximum penalty allowed.

DNA evidence also links Baker, a fou
r-time convicted felon, to a dozen rapes in Fulton and DeKalb counties, said Prosecu
tor Gayle Abramson. These are in addition to the six that spawned the convictions, she said.

Lou Arcangeli, a retired Atlanta police commander, said Baker could have been caught earlier if police would have been more aggressive in their investigations.

"It's justice delayed," said Arcangeli, who was demoted in 1998 after he said that the city had underreported crime to polish its image for the 1996 Olympics.

Another former Atlanta police officer, Lisa James, who used to work with the department's sex-crimes unit, said Baker was suspected in other cases, but police could not connect him to them because the incidents weren't investigated thoroughly enough.

What did you expect? The Apelanta police force is run by a bunch of lazy, good for nothing, no account niggers.
