Newport News Woman Charged With Child Neglect
A Newport News woman was charged Wednesday with three counts of felony child neglect after officials say a one-year old child in her care wandered out into the rain, then the woman left a two-year old and another one-year old alone while she searched for the first child.
According to police, they were called to the Brookridge Apartments on Peninsula Drive around 9:30am on reports that a child was wandering alone in the complex.
Officials say an woman found the boy out in the rain near a dumpster in the 5600 block of Madison Avenue in the southern edge of the Brookridge complex.
Police later located 24-year-old Chaquita Gaskins, of the 1200 block of 16th Street, who they say was carin
g for the boy - as well as her own children - in an apartment in the 700 block of Peninsula Drive in the Brookridge complex.
Authorities allege Gaskins also left her own children, a two-year old girl and one-year old boy, unattended Wednesday morning while searching for the missing one-year old.
Child Protective Services was called to the scene and the three children were placed in the custody of relatives.
In addition to the three counts of felony child neglect, Gaskins is also charged with one count of misdemeanor obstruction of justice.
Gaskins is being held without bond in the Newport News City Jail.
