Eleven-year-old was sexually assaulted, murdered

Someone climbed through the bedroom window of an eleven-year-old girl, sexually assaulted her and murdered her on Halloween night, or early the next morning.
A late afternoon news conference on Wednesday revealed the disturbing details of 11-year-old Victoria Sandoval's murder in southwest Albuquerque.

Albuquerque police revealed that Victoria sexually assaulted and asphyxiated.

Victoria lived with her grandparents, who found her body shortly before dawn Tuesday at their home in the Rosewood Mobile Home Park.

Detectives are still on the hunt for her killer, but they do believe the little Victoria knew her killer.

Police say the grandparents, who are her legal guardians, didn't hear anything Monday night. It was the next morning when the grandmother tried to wake her up for school that Victoria&#

39;s death was discovered.

Detectives s
ay the girl's bedroom and the home have provided many clues.

During the night, a subject did enter the home and the 11-year-old girl was sexually assaulted and then asphyxiated in some manner, says APD Crimes Against Children Captain Kevin McCabe.

Police won't say specifically how the girl was asphyxiated. As for her killer, detectives say they have a number of leads but no one has been arrested or taken into custody.

Police say the Victoria had been out trick or treating Halloween night.

Police said they do not know why Gonzales was at the school. Gonzales is not a student, and Albuquerque Public School officials said they were unaware the arrest had been made at West Mesa.

Schultz said a confidential informant told police about a relationship between the victim, Victoria Sandoval, and Gonzales, leading police to seek him for questioning Thursday afternoon.

Police said they planned to charge Gonzales with an open count of murder and that other charges may be added as the investigation continues.

According to police, autopsy results show that Sandoval was sexually assaulted in her West Side mobile home bedroom before she was strangled.
