Rapist's chilling words

Mohi Te Whiu had told the woman he raped, "Welcome to your day of devastation."

However, the woman says that day has stretched into more than a year already and will likely last for years to come.

In the High Court in Wellington today Mohi Taylor John Te Whiu, who turned 51 yesterday, was sentenced to the open-ended jail term of preventive detention.

He has to serve at least five years before he can be considered for parole, but even if he is eventually released he will remain subject to recall to prison for life.

Mohi was found guilty of three charges of rape, all dating from March 21 last year. He maintains he is innocent.

The woman he raped, who had been a friend, read part of her victim impact statement to Justice Jill Mallon in court.

The woman said she thought she would need years of counselling. She has panic attacks and "meltdowns" in crowds. She has developed an eating disorder and is unable to sleep.

Justice Mallon said Te Whiu had gone to the woman's house. He said, "Welcome to your day of devastation," and threw her phone across the room.

She was threatened, intimidated and raped over several hours.

In 1991 Te Whiu had raped and sexually violated an 11-year-old girl in what was described as a horrific sexual assault.

Te Whiu was said to have a degree of remorse and shame about that crime that more than 20 years later he still found hard to talk about.

And while Te Whiu was on bail awaiting trial for the latest rapes he grabbed a bar worker in Christchurch for which he was convicted of indecent assault and sentenced to six months' jail.

Justice Mallon said specialist medical reports predicted Te Whiu had a high risk of committing further sexual offences.

Preventive detention was needed because increasing age did not seem to be reducing Te Whiu's offending as would normally be expected, she said.

The only thing that would stop this "man" is execution. In the Olden Times, we executed rapists, no questions asked, no pardons granted. To all rapists in the Olden Times: you rape and you die!
