HAINES CITY, Fla. -- A man suspected in a hit-and-run crash that killed an off-duty police officer early Wednesday was in police custody, authorities said.

Miguel Gonzalez, 43, of Haines City, is suspected of being the driver who fled after a head-on collision that killed 24-year-old Haines City officer Phoenix M. Braithwaite, Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Larry Coggins said.

Coggins said Gonzalez will be booked in the Polk County Jail Wednesday night on a felony charge of leaving the scene of a fatal accident. A deputy found Gonzalez walking down a road in Haines City several hours after the crash.

"He was cut and
bruised and looked like he'd been hiding in the woods all day," Coggins said of Gonzalez.

Braithwaite, who was in his police uniform, was riding his motorcycle to work about 5:25 a.m. Wednesday when he was hit head-on by a van near the Osceola-Polk county line, Coggins said. Braithwaite was thrown into oncoming traffic and was hit by a tractor-trailer rig and a cement truck. He died at the scene.

The driver of the van fled into the woods. But two passengers stayed at the scene and helped investigators identify Gonzalez as the driver, Coggins said.

Orange County Sheriff Kevin Beary is apologizing for comments he made about illegal aliens after the death of a deputy this week.

Beary said he was irritated with the federal government because he believed illegal immigrants were responsible for the death of Orange County Deputy Michael Callin and another officer in Haines City.

After the comment, Beary received a backlash of complaints from members of the Latino community who were outraged, Local 6 News reported.

The teen accused of hitting and killing Callin was later found to be an American citizen and not an illegal alien.

Beary apologized Friday but said he comments were taken out of context.

"That was not his intent," Orange County sheriff's spokesman Carlos Torres said. "His intent was never to offend anyone. His intent was not to get a community upset at the sheriff's office or upset at the sheriff. That was never the plan."

The sheriff's office said it did not want to divide the community but bring it together.
