BURKE COUNTY -- One man was arrested and charged Monday for what police call a hate crime.

Burke County Sheriff's deputies say on Saturday Grady Carswell, 34, burned a cross near the home of Gloria Dula, who is African-American.

Dula says the hate crime doesn't scare her.

"It really opened my eyes to how people are, says Dula, But damn them"â┚¬Ã…¡ÃƒÆ’”šÃ”š¦I don't care "â┚¬Ã…¡ÃƒÆ’”šÃ”š¦ there are a lot of ignorant people and if they are going to be this ignorant"â┚¬Ã…¡ÃƒÆ’”šÃ”š¦you need to find a place by yourself.

Sheriff's deputies say Carswell had multiple motives in committing the crime.

Carswell lives close to where the cross was set on fire.
