A Long Island school bus driver was arrested Monday for allegedly operating the vehicle while drunk, police said.
Mercedes Parada, 29, was found slumped over the steering wheel of the occupied school bus at the corner of South Franklin Street and Grove Street in Hempstead at about 4:50 p.m., according to Nassau County police.
Responding officers observed “multiple clues indicating the presence of alcohol” and later determined she was intoxicated, police said.
Parada was placed under arrest and the children on board were safely returned to their parents, authorities said.
The bus driver was charged with driving while intoxicated, aggravated driving while intoxicated and endangering the welfare of a child.
