A Virginia Tech student was arrested Monday after an alleged sexual assault last Tuesday night in Pritchard Hall.

Tech police arrested Kwadwo Yeboah-Kankam, 19, after obtaining two felony warrants for attempted rape and attempted forcible sodomy, Capt. Robert Baudo said.

The victim, a 19-year-old Tech student, told police that she met Yeboah-Kankam over the Internet on Feb. 22,
two days before the alleged incident.

According to the victim, the two met in Yeboah-Kankam's room in Pritchard Hall last Tuesday around 11 p.m. when the incident occurred.

The victim did not
r
come
to police until Friday. Police are not releasing details of
the incident and could not give information about whether Yeboah-Kankam had been released.

Yeboah-Kankam's roommate said he hasn't seen or heard from the accused since his arrest.

Though Yeboah-Kankam lives on campus, Student Programs has no involvement in the trial process, said Ed Spencer, assistant vice president for student affairs.

Tech police informed Spencer's office of the allegation over the weekend but strictly on a need-to-know basis, he said.

This is a case for the court system, Spencer said.

Police could decide to send the case through the judicial referral process or it may just go through the court system, or both, Spencer said.

If a person goes through a trial in the Virginia cou
rts, he or she can still be put through a judicial referral. This is not considered double jeopardy.

Once you enroll at Tech, you assume the status of a student, Spencer said. You can go to
tr
ial as a Vir
ginia resident and also as a student at Tech.

If p
olice feel there is an imminent threat to surrounding residents, Student Programs can enact a policy that allows it to suspend an accused student on an interim basis and remove that student from a residence hall, Spencer said.

This was not necessary for the case involving Yeboah-Kankam.

"t seems this was strictly an individual male/female incident, Spencer said.

Tech's student directory lists Yeboah-Kankam as a student in the Pamplin College of Business with an undecided major.
