KKK fliers found at Indy high school

INDIANAPOLIS -- Fliers calling for a revival of the Ku Klux Klan were distributed across Tech High School, school administrators said today.

The handwritten fliers found on Monday stated the Ku Klux Klan would be revived at the school on Oct. 31. They also contained racial slurs and threats against minorities.

Tech's student body is 65 percent black, according to the Indiana Department of Education. More than 100 of the fliers were found across the campus before school on Monday, Vice Principal Robert Huggins said.

School administrators recovered the papers from the grounds and continued to confiscate them as more were found throughout the day, he said.

Administrators did not tell students about the fliers until a notice was sent home today. Huggins said the school didn’t think most students knew of the fliers, as the majority had been picked up before school began.

“This, by most of us, wasn’t considered to be an alarm,”” Huggins said of the school’s immediate reaction. “It was considered to be a prank.””

The Indianapolis Public Schools Police and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police are investigating the incident, Huggins said.

The school will stay open on Oct. 31.
