Elloree Teenager Arrested in Cousin's Murder

(Orangeburg) - Orangeburg County authorities say they have made an arrest in the death of 14-year-old Chanta Davis.

18-year-old Ezekiel Haynes, the victim's cousin, has been charged with murder. Haynes was denied bond Friday and will appear before a circuit court judge on January 18, 2005.

"As of the arrest of the suspect, he has given a full confession," says Orangeburg County Sheriff L

Williams says evidence shows that a window shade cord from the abandoned home and a tire iron were used for weapons to kill Davis. The Orangeburg County Coroner's office confirmed Davis was strangled.

During a press conference Friday, the sheriff says the victim and the suspect attended a sporting event earlier in the day. They appeared to have had some type of disagreement while at the mobile home and that's when Davis went missing.

Family members of both Davis and Haynes packed the Orangeburg County courtroom Friday. Their cries could be heard while a judge presented Haynes with the murder charge against him.

They told News19 that the cousins appeared to get along well and were so clos
e th
ey were like brother and sister.

Davis' cousin, Linda Adams, says the arrest provides little comfort, and now two families that were once so close, is now a family divided. "This really separated us. I hate it,
" she says.

Davis was an eighth grade student at an Elloree school, and was last seen on her way there.

Williams said earlier in the day that two men believed to be involved in the girl's death had been taken into custody. "We know one of them tried to conceal evidence," said Williams. As far as the other suspect, Williams says the investigation is ongoing and more charges are pending.

A transportation worker saw the body of Davis floating in the pond. Divers with the Department of Natural Resources recovered the girl's body shortly thereafter. Investigators found blunt trauma to her upper body.

Authorities say Davis' grandparents were her legal guardians. And her father is a guardsmen serving in Iraq. Family members say
the fath
er is on the way back to South Carolina. Davis' funeral is set for Tuesday at Felderville AME Church.

Haynes is being held in the Orangeburg County jail.
