STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A trio of Staten Island teenagers who threatened to kill a Jewish man in Meiers Corners Sunday night have been arrested on hate crime charges, police said.

The teens, who were standing at a bus stop on the corner of Harold Street and Washington Avenue around 7:15 p.m., allegedly threw a rock at the man as he approached the stop and then began verbally assaulting him, an NYPD spokesman said.

Police said the boys :rolleyes:surrounded the man, who was wearing a yarmulke, and threatened to beat him up, while making reference to the cloth cap, which is traditionally worn by Jewish men as a sign of respect toward God.

The man escaped the teens unharmed and called 911 to report the incident, which occurred just blocks from Young Israel of Staten Island, an Orthodox Jewish synagogue.

Patrol officers responded to the scene and arrested the trio a short time later, cops said.

The eldest of the boys, Kareem Cook, 17, of Stapleton, was carrying a kitchen knife when cops stopped him, an NYPD spokesman said. He was charged with aggravated harassment as a hate crime, menacing as a hate crime and criminal possession of a weapon, the spokesman said.

Police did not release the names of the other two teens arrested because they are both 15-year-old minors.
