Former THS athletes face rape charges

Jabari Asim Jackson & Christopher Edward Collins

Two former Texas High football players have been indicted on charges of aggravated sexual assault after a lengthy investigation into an incident earlier this year involving a 12-year-old girl, officials said.

Christopher Edward Collins, 17, of Texarkana, Texas, was indicted on Thursday for aggravated sexual assault of a child, said Bowie County District Attorney Bobby Lockhart.

Texarkana Independent School District officials did not return Gazette calls Thursday to confirm or deny if Collins is enrolled in any school within the district. Collins did not play for Texas High during the 2004-05 football season.

His co-defendant, Jabari Asim Jackson, 18, was indic

ted on two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child. One count
represents oral sex and the second count represents vaginal sex. Jackson is a 2004 graduate of Texas High.

The indictments follow a lengthy investigation by the Texarkana, Texas, Police Department and the Bowie County District Attorney's office. The next step in the case for both men is arraignment before a judge to enter pleas to the charges.

Collins is free on a $40,000 bail bond, and Jackson is free on a $20,000 bail bond.

The allegations center around a post-prom party for several THS students on May 23 at a local hotel.

The girl-whose identity is protected in police reports-had a new friend spending the night at her house. At some point that night, they allegedly used a cell phone to contact a teen who was attending the party at a Texarkana, Texas, hotel. The teen and another male teen drove to the girl's home and gave her and her friend a ride to the party.

Once they arrived at t
he h
otel, the girl was encouraged to drink vodka.

"(The victim) became intoxicated and re
members two males on top of her on the bed 'taking turns,'" according to a police report.

The girl was returned home at about 6:30 a.m. when she and her friend were driven to the girl's neighborhood and left a block away from the house, investigators said.

The girl told police-whom she met at CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System-that she did not remember specifics about the incident.

However, she did not have her underwear when she went home and complained of pain. Police also observed bruising on her neck and scratches on her arms and shoulder.

Using a rape kit, evidence of the sexual assault was collected at the hospital emergency room.
