The incident took place on Sunday, when the medic was visiting a block whose residents are all Christian, local media reports say.

An Israeli ambulance worker was fired after he was caught on camera spitting on portraits of Jesus while visiting a Christian home in Tel Aviv to carry out a coronavirus test.

Security camera footage showed the medic removing his mask and spitting on three pictures in a hallway in the house.

As he was leaving the block of flats, he was stopped by a tenant who asked why he spat on the portraits. The medic replied that those images were a form of idolatry that is forbidden by the Hebrew Bible.

Israel's ambulance service has "strongly condemned" the medic's behaviour. Magen David Adom (MDA) took to Twitter to comment on the incident and inform the public about the disciplinary measures applied to their employee.

This is a severe incident for which the employee was called to a disciplinary hearing by MDA's management. The employee was informed that he is unworthy of representing the organization and wearing the uniform, and that he is being dismissed immediately.

A Jewish settler attempted today on burning down the Gethsemane Church in the Mount of Olives area in occupied East Jerusalem, according to local sources.

Witnesses reported that an illegal Jewish settler sneaked into the premises of the church before he was seen pouring some flammable liquid there.

The settler then tried to set some of the seats on fire but was thwarted by local Palestinian citizens who handed him over to a police force that had just arrived at the scene.

“It must be understood that Palestinian Christians are neither aliens nor bystanders in Palestine. They have been victimized equally as their Muslim brethren, and have also played a major role in defining the modern Palestinian identity, through their resistance, spirituality, deep connection to the land, artistic contributions and burgeoning scholarship,” Palestinian journalist and editor of The Palestine Chronicle Ramzy Baroud wrote in a recent article.

“Israel must not be allowed to ostracize the world’s most ancient Christian community from their ancestral land so that it may score a few points in its deeply disturbing drive for racial supremacy,” Baroud added.

Perhaps we should refer to Jews as 'Church-burners.'

Greek Orthodox Patriarch warns Christian presence in Jerusalem under threat by Zionist extremists

Patriarch Theophilos III charges that a rising number of assaults against Christians and church buildings are an attempt to drive the Christian community out of Jerusalem’s Old City.

“Our churches are threatened by Israeli radical fringe groups,” wrote Patriarch Theophilos III in a column published in last Saturday’s British daily, The Times. “At the hands of these Zionist extremists,” Jerusalem’s Greek Orthodox Patriarch said, “the Christian community in Jerusalem is suffering greatly.”

Theophilos charged that a rising number of assaults against Christians and church buildings are an attempt to drive the Christian community out of Jerusalem’s Old City, home to Christians, Jews and Muslims and their holy sites.

“Our brothers and sisters are the victims of hate crimes,” he wrote.

The column appeared January 8, the day after Greek Orthodox Christians celebrated Christmas.

According to Orthodox Times, the Patriarch had attended a Christmas Eve dinner in Bethlehem during which he gave a speech describing an increase in verbal and physical assaults on Christians committed by Israeli radical groups who “are committing their crimes in a deliberate attempt to expel Christians from Jerusalem and other parts of the Holy Land.”

In the speech, Theophilos pointed to assaults against the Christian presence “especially in Jaffa Gate in Jerusalem, the entrance of pilgrims to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the various monasteries and churches of the Old City, in addition to the actions of distorting the cultural and historical identity of the area of the New Gate.”

In both his Christmas Eve speech and The Times article, Theophilos took a step beyond a December 13 statement issued by thirteen Christian leaders and Heads of Churches in Jerusalem. That statement had expressed the leaders “grave concern” that the Israeli government’s commitment to provide a safe home for Christians in the Holy Land “is betrayed by the failure of local politicians, officials and law enforcement agencies to curb the activities of radical groups who regularly intimidate local Christians, assault priests and clergy, and desecrate Holy sites and church properties.”

Theopholis identified the radical groups as Israeli, as Zionist extremists.

On Sunday, Israeli officials rejected Theophilos’ accusations as baseless and pointed to a Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ press release issued on December 22 which chastised an earlier statement by church leaders. The Israeli government’s press release claims, “the Christian population in Israel – including in Jerusalem – enjoys full freedom of religion and of worship, is constantly growing, and is part of the unique fabric of Israeli society,” and wished “all Christians in the Holy Land and across the world a Merry Christmas and a happy new year!”

In his Christmas Eve speech, delivered in Arabic, Patriarch Theophilos said, “We raise our voice loudly during this time of the year to confirm that the Holy Land is not only the land of the birth of Christ, but the land of the birth of Christianity which then was launched to the whole world. The entire Christian world is responsible for the survival of Christians in our beloved Holy Land and the Middle East in general. We affirm our demand to preserve… the city’s mosaic and diversity so that Jerusalem would be the spiritual center of the three monotheistic religions.”

US lawmakers say radical groups in Israel attack Christians 'with impunity'

The rare bipartisan criticism follows warnings of a 'systematic attempt' to drive Christians out of Jerusalem and the holy land

A bipartisan group of US lawmakers issued a rare critique against Israel on Friday, citing a rise in attacks on the Christian community in Jerusalem carried out by Israeli perpetrators acting with "impunity".
The lawmakers, led by Democratic Congressman Joaquin Castro and Republican Gus Bilirakis, said radical groups in Israel were looking to "drive out" Christians from the holy city and threatening its "cultural and religious diversity".
We're 'deeply concerned' by rise in attacks against Jerusalem's Christian community
- US lawmakers
“We write today as a bipartisan group of Members of Congress deeply concerned by the rise in attacks against the Christian community in Jerusalem,” the lawmakers stated.
Jerusalem is a holy city for Christians as well as Muslims and Jews. The city has 95 churches and is home to one of the five Greek Orthodox Patriarchates, along with sizable numbers of Melkite Greek Catholics, Roman Catholics, Syriacs, and Armenians.
A century ago, Christians made up around 25 percent of Jerusalem’s population, but their presence has since dwindled to less than two percent today.
While the number of Christians living across the Middle East has been falling for decades, the letter from US lawmakers singling out the precarious state of Christians in the holy city comes amid recent warnings from church leaders about the Christian community's presence.

'Betrayed'

In December, the thirteen Christian Patriarchs and heads of the Churches of Jerusalem issued a joint statement warning of a "systematic attempt" to drive Christians out of Jerusalem and the holy land.
While they noted the declared commitment by the Israeli government to uphold the safety of Christians and freedom of worship, they said it was being “betrayed” by local politicians, law enforcement agencies, and officials in Israel who refuse to curb the actions of radical groups "intimidating" Christians and "desecrating" holy sites.

The Greek Patriarchate, one of the largest single property owners in Jerusalem, which leases Israel the land on which the Knesset is built, has long been locked in legal battles with settler groups over property in the city. Tensions boiled over recently around the church-owned Petra Hotel, which Israeli police helped a settler group partially seize in March.
In their letter on Friday, the US lawmakers issued a stark warning about attacks on Christians and Christian sites. They cited a December 2020 attempt by an Israeli man to burn the Church of All Nations located on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, along with four acts of vandalism in one month in 2021 against the monastery of the Romanian Church in Jerusalem.
They also drew attention to attacks on Christian clergy, including the May 2021 assault of an Armenian priest by three Israeli youths.
“The actions of radical groups who are able to act with impunity directly threaten the religious freedom of the Christian community in Jerusalem and undermines the rich history of interfaith cooperation within the city,” the letter said.
In addition, the lawmakers said that a shrinking Christian presence in the holy land would have ramifications for humanitarian issues, as ministry programmes organised under the auspices of the Christian churches in Jerusalem carry out medical, educational, and humanitarian work for people regardless of religious affiliation throughout Israel, the Palestinian territories and Jordan.
The lawmakers called on the State Department “to work with the Israeli government to uphold its stated commitment” to freedom of religion and worship and to hold radical groups accountable for attacks against Christians.

For Israel, political and religious domination go hand in hand in Jerusalem

Zionism has fragmented the multi-religious population in Palestine geographically, religiously, socially, and politically. In the process it has denied them one of the simplest rights a human being could ever yearn for — the right to pray in peace.

On Saturday, April 23, a day before Orthodox Easter, Israeli police denied hundreds of Palestinian Christians entry into the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem to celebrate the “Holy Fire” ceremony, during over two weeks of terrifying levels of attacks and abuses with rubber-coated steel bullets, teargas, and stun grenades against Palestinian Muslim worshipers inside the sacred courtyards and prayer halls of the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Meanwhile, Jewish settlers were freely marching and waving flags in blatant disregard of the Muslim and Christian holy days, attacking worshipers, and even ignoring the official – but unenforced – Israeli police prohibition against the rally.
Outrage across Palestine and the world in solidarity with Palestinian worshipers rose up to resist the physical attacks, mass arrests, and moral injustice inflicted by the Israeli settler-police alliance, and signaled real stress in global public opinion that violations of religious freedom are universally taboo.
But since 1948, Israel has pursued a relentless policy of establishing an exclusively Jewish State and maintaining Jewish demographic hegemony throughout historic Palestine. This policy, a human rights violation and blatant apartheid, has meant taking control over more and more Palestinian lands and homes and benefiting Jewish Israelis only, while reducing the Palestinians’ presence and obstructing their capacity for lawful protest and self-determination.
Today’s increased aggressions in Jerusalem, along with Zionist legal enactments such as the 2018 Nation-State Law and the Citizenship Law, boldly foreground a crackdown on the Palestinians’ right to exist and worship, with no regard to Islam or Christianity. They serve to reinforce the labyrinthine settler-colonial system that attempts to displace Palestinians and replace them with Jewish settlers, and strike at the core of any just strategy aimed at the Palestinian people’s rights to religious worship and celebration.
Those restrictions aren’t only racially discriminatory but also demonstrate Israel’s deliberate attempt to exercise unchallenged religious domination across Jerusalem. They go beyond breaking news on TV and social media and even the illegal attempt to claim the international holy city as its political capital, and represent an extension of illegal control over Jerusalem’s diverse spiritual manifestations, catering only to the Jewish segment of the population, with a broader escalation of ethnocentric policies that lessen non-Jewish spiritual practices in the holy city known for hundreds of decades as a center of multi-faith observance.
Jerusalem’s holy sites are central to Israel’s system of domination and segregation.
Zionism has fragmented the multi-religious population in Palestine geographically, religiously, socially, demographically, and politically and denied them one of the simplest rights a human being could ever yearn for—prayer in peace. Jerusalem’s holy sites are central to Israel’s system of domination and segregation. Interference in Palestinian Muslims’ and Christians’ ability to gather for prayer and worship is a particularly egregious violation of one of the most universally recognized human rights—freedom of religion.
Such violations extend not only to Palestinians living in Jerusalem but also to those everywhere in the occupied Palestinian territory. Palestinian Christians living in the Aida Refugee Camp, less than 15 kilometers from Jerusalem, are unlikely ever to visit the city’s holiest places due to restrictions on their mobility. Others living in the West Bank, a few miles from Jerusalem, smuggle over the wall to attend prayers at the most vibrant gathering place and symbol of Palestinian identity.
A Palestinian young man named Ibrahim, who kept his whole name from being publishing, says in an interview with the New York Times’ Raja Abdulrahim that it’s not just about religion but “about asserting our existence.” Another man interviewed: “It’s bad enough that we are already living under occupation, but you are also preventing me from praying in Al Aqsa.”
Globally, manufactured accusations of ‘terrorism’ and ‘antisemitism’ by Israel’s state propaganda apparatus along with US-based Zionist organizations allow such worship abuses and restrictions on Palestinian spiritual and cultural life.
Similarly, Zionist religious and Biblical claims become a pretext not only for illegal settlements in the West Bank but also for the dispossession of Palestinians from their ancestral homes in Jerusalem. Politicians, billionaire philanthropists, archaeologists, and foreign public servants race to undermine the city’s rich cosmopolitan history, labeling it as eternally and exclusively Jewish and dynamically manipulating the historical city’s topography and ancient subterranean heritage, as well as its demography in pursuit of this fantasy.
One of the most drastic examples is the archaeological excavations and blasting of tunnels in search of the City of David underneath the Palestinian neighborhood of Silwan, resulting in destroyed foundations, demolitions, disruption of lives, and more displacement for dozens of Palestinian families.
Yet, despite Israel’s violence and the enormous foreign funds invested in its efforts to reinvent Palestine’s Jerusalem historically and culturally, Palestinians of diverse faiths and locations remain steadfast in their struggle against Zionist injustice to regain the freedom of worship alongside the demand for other freedoms and rights, such as the right of return for the hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees in Gaza, the West Bank, and in diaspora.
