HAMPTON

Police said a 15-year-old has been charged in an attempted robbery that left an 18-year-old dead :pon Sunday.

The incident was reported to police shortly after 2:45 p.m., a police news release says. The original report was that a person had been robbed in the 2100 block of Kecoughtan Road.

While officers were on their way, the call was upgraded to a shooting. When they arrived, they found Jafari Mitchell, 18, suffering a single gunshot wound, the release says. Mitchell was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Police wrote that their investigation revealed that two people approached a 71-year-old man, pulled out a gun and demanded money. The senior citizen was armed with a gun and fired because he feared for his safety, the release says.

The 71-year-old man called 911 to report the shooting and stayed at the scene until police arrived. One of the suspects ran away after the shooting. No charges are being sought against him, the release says.

The 15-year-old has been charged with attempted robbery and use of a firearm in a felony, the release says. He is being held in juvenile detention.
