Police investigating rape complaint at U-K

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Lexington police say today they're investigating a complaint filed by a woman alleging a rape at Wildcat Lodge, a U-K dorm occupied by 13 basketball players and 13 non-athletes.

At a morning news conference, Assistant Chief Ken Hall offered few details about the investigation, which he said is in its "infant stages." Police have named neither the woman nor the suspect and no charges have been filed.

In addition to the players and non-players who live at Wildcat Lodge, there are two staff members who occupy an upstairs apartment. A U-K spokeswoman says all guests have to be signed in and signed out.

Hall said the alleged rape victim filed the complaint w
ith Lexington police on the afternoon of April 22nd. The police
report said the time of the alleged incident was between 12:30 p-m and 2:30 p-m, two days earlier.

Hall said tests were done at a hospital and that D-N-A testing will be part of the investigation.

According to the police report, the woman said that the suspect (in these words) "had intercourse with her without consent due to complainant being physically helpless." The report released by police did not list names.

Hall said the woman and the suspect were acquaintances, but that he did not know why the woman was at Wildcat Lodge.

Hall said he did not know when the investigation would be completed.

Hey guys, let's not jump to conclusions by assuming that these 26 males were African-Americans. It is bigoted to assume that. It just shows that in our white dominated society, we are very prejudiced.

The Lexington Herald-Leader is reporting that the agent for Kentucky basketball player Chuck Hayes has been notified of the police investigation into Hayes involvement in a rape investigation that allegedly took place on April 20 at Wildcat Lodge.

A police report says the woman, 29, told police she was raped the afternoon of April 20 at Wildcat Lodge, a UK residence hall that houses 28 residents, 16 of whom are UK basketball players.

Lexington police will drop an investigation into an allegation of a sexual assault at the University of Kentucky basketball team dormitory unless more information comes forward.

Assistant Lexington Police Chief Ken Hall said today the woman who made the original complaint said she will not participate in the investigation. And the spokesman said police were unable to verify some of the allegations made in the complaint.

Police said they did not talk to the alleged assailant, but that probably would not have made any difference in the decision to drop the investigation.

A woman told police that she was assaulted on April 20th at Wildcat Lodge, which is home to most of the basketball team members, some staff and other students.

The Lexington police s
aid it was not uncommon for investigations
into such allegations to be dropped.

Lexington police closed an investigation of a rape allegation at the University of Kentucky�s Wildcat Lodge and said no one will be charged in the case.

At a 2:30 p.m. news conference, Assistant Chief Ken Hall said the woman who made the original complaint was not willing to go forward. Police were unable to build a case that would lead to any arrests.

Police have never named a suspect in the case.

Police had confirmed there was only one suspect and Chuck Hayes' agent has said he was notified of the police investigation. The agent has also said that Hayes and the woman had consensual sex.

The woman had originally filed a complaint with police saying she was raped in the afternoon of April 20 at the lodge, which is best known as the home to UK basketbal
l players.

The alleged rape was reported two
days after the incident at 337 Lexington Avenue, which houses 28 students, 16 of whom are basketball players.
