POMONA (CBSLA.com) –Two suspected street racers were charged with murder and DUI Thursday for allegedly causing a crash that killed an elderly woman on Christmas in West Covina.

Vincent Lopez, 30, and Victor Hugo Sanchez, 34, were each charged with one count of murder and one count of driving under the influence causing injury in connection with the crash that happened about 9 p.m. Tuesday at Lark Ellen and Merced avenues, West Covina police Lt. David Lee said.

The suspects are tentatively scheduled to be arraigned Friday.

Celia La Torre, 90, of West Covina, had just been released from Queen of the Valley Hospital. She was seated in a wheelchair secured in a van driven by her son, 72-year-old Jaime Ochoa, when the vehicle was broadsided by a Mitsubishi Eclipse allegedly driven by Lopez.

La Torre was ejected from the van and pronounced dead at the scene.

Ochoa was taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, where he was treated for head trauma.

Lopez was taken to Queen of the Valley Hospital for leg injuries, where he remained as of Thursday.

Police said Lopez and Sanchez were seen racing on Lark Ellen Avenue moments before the crash.

“At the time of the accident, the two were still racing. Only one of the vehicles collided into the van. The other one (Sanchez) actually took off and went eastbound on Merced and left the scene,” said West Covina police Cpl. Rudy Lopez.

Sanchez was arrested Wednesday in Pomona.

The suspects had also been drinking in a bar in the 200 block of South Glendora Avenue within an hour before the accident, according to detectives.

Both men face life in prison with the possibility of parole, if convicted.

NORTH LAS VEGAS -- North Las Vegas Police said a young man hit while walking on a sidewalk has died and a teenager remains in critical condition. Two men from North Las Vegas were arrested in connection with the crash.

The crash happened about 4 p.m. Tuesday on Gliding Eagle Road, near Clayton Street and Centennial Parkway.

According to police, the driver of the car could not negotiate a curve, left the roadway and hit the 16-year-old girl and 18-year-old man.

Following the crash, the passenger of the car tried to dispose of small bags of marijuana, according to police. No one in the car was hurt.

Police arrested the driver of the car, 19-year-old Cristian Ivan Diaz, on failure to maintain a travel lane and failure to obtain a Nevada driver's license. Diaz will likely face additional charges when the investigation ends, police said.

Police also arrested the 18-year-old passenger in the car, Ricardo Daniel Velasquez, who is being charged with possession of marijuana and destruction of evidence.

Investigators believe speed, drugs and alcohol might have been factors in the crash.

DA says suspect in Daly City crash that killed three was driving drunk

DenisDemacedoBG.jpg

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. —

A 28-year-old Sunnyvale man who allegedly caused a crash that killed three members of a Daly City family on Saturday night had been drinking at a pizza parlor for several hours earlier that day, a prosecutor said Tuesday.

San Mateo County prosecutors allege that Denis Pereirade Macedo spent as many as five hours drinking beer with friends at a Daly City restaurant before getting behind the wheel at around 8 p.m., Assistant District Attorney Al Serrato said.

Shortly thereafter, Macedo allegedly rear-ended another vehicle at a stop sign on Eastmoor Avenue and then drove around the vehicle to flee the scene, Serrato said.

As he drove west on Eastmoor Avenue, Macedo allegedly reached speeds of up to 60 mph, Serrato said.

Within seconds, Macedo broadsided the driver's side of a car that was pulling away from the right curb to make a U-turn.

Three people in the car -- Josefa Osorio Acevedo, 50, and her sons Amado Osorio Acevedo, 23, and Josue Osorio, 15, -- died at the scene, according to Daly City police.

Another woman in the car was seriously injured and taken to a hospital, police said.

She remains hospitalized in stable condition, according to the district attorney's office.

Macedo, who was not injured, was arrested at the scene.

A blood test taken two hours after the crash measured Macedo's blood-alcohol level at .18 percent, more than twice the legal limit, Serrato said.

Wearing orange jail clothes and speaking through a Spanish interpreter, Macedo appeared briefly Tuesday afternoon in San Mateo County Superior Court.

He has been charged with three counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while driving under the influence, felony DUI causing great bodily injury, and misdemeanor hit-and-run, Assistant District Attorney Al Serrato said.

Macedo, who is Brazilian and a native Portuguese speaker, informed the court in broken sentences that he could not understand the proceedings in Spanish or English.

Judge Kathleen McKenna postponed his arraignment hearing until Thursday, when a Portuguese interpreter would be present.

Macedo has a prior DUI conviction in Santa Clara County from 2011, Serrato said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have arrested a man in a hit-and-run that left two people dead, including a toddler.

Oscar Francisco Garcia-Fuentes, 23, is charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter and three counts of felony hit-and-run, police announced early Sunday. He is being held in the Mecklenburg County jail.

CMPD said detectives from multiple units and patrol divisions worked to identify and arrest the driver involved in the two-car wreck, which occurred around 2:20 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of North Sharon Amity and Albemarle Road.

Man Dies After Crashing Car Into NJ Old Age Home
Force of crash leaves car upright

Lakewood+Car+Crash.jpg

A man died after crashing his sedan into the entrance of a Lakewood, N.J. assisted-living community early this morning.

The force of the crash at the Lakewood Courtyard left the car vertical, nearly perpendicular to the ground, the front end of the silver vehicle crushed under an entryway.

Video captured by the Lakewood Scoop shows the aftermath.

A Lakewood Police spokesman told NBC10 that Apolonio Velis-Perez was driving westbound on Main Street (Route 88) around 2 a.m. when he failed to turn at Madison Avenue (U.S. Route 9), jumped the curb and slammed into the Courtyard Lakewood at a high-rate of speed.

Velis-Perez, who had Pennsylvania plates on his car, died in the wreck. No one inside the building was injured, according to police.

No residents live in the area of the kosher assisted living facility that Velis-Perez struck. Building inspectors were called to the scene to make sure the structure remained sound.

Police are investigating if alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.

2 NJ Crossing Guards Admit to Drinking Before Fatal Accident
Both crossing guards have admitted drinking after their shifts before they struck and killed a 68-year-old woman, according to police.
Friday, Mar 22, 2013 | Updated 10:00 AM

Two Westfield crossing guards have admitted drinking after their shifts before they struck and killed a pedestrian.

Charles Casiere, 85, pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated, vehicular homicide and aggravated assault with an automobile Thursday.

His fellow crossing guard, John Diaz, 75, pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident.

On January 26, Casiere admitted to drinking "two or three vodkas" at the Knights of Columbus hall after his 4 p.m shift as a school crossing guard. Also at the bar was Diaz who admitted he had been drinking too.

About two hours later, authorities say 68-year-old Patricia Currie had grazed a man with her car and was helping him off the street when Casiere ran through the intersection at North Avenue at Tuttle Parkway and struck her. Police say Diaz then hit her as she lay on the ground. Currie was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead a short time later.

Another man was also seriously injured in the accident, according to investigators.

The Star-Ledger of Newark reports both men are seeking probation with no jail time.

Police: Man, hiding in cactus, suspected of sex while driving

A 25-year-old man is facing multiple charges after police said he was drunkenly having sex with a woman while driving, crashed his car and then ran from police.

Luis Briones, 25, was found with one shoe on and his shorts on inside-out Monday night, hiding in a cactus, after he crashed his Ford Explorer on the 2600 block of Pennsylvania Avenue NE on Monday night.

Briones’ female passenger was found naked outside the vehicle after being ejected. She had deep cuts to her face and head, but was in stable condition when she was sent to the hospital, police said.

Police said Briones was heading north on Pennsylvania when he ran a red light and struck a car heading westbound on Menaul Boulevard NE.

“Mr. Briones was observed to be having sexual intercourse with the passenger and sped off… at a high rate of speed,” the Albuquerque police officer wrote in a criminal complaint. “Their activities presented a danger to others in the roadway as exhibited by the accident.”

Witnesses told police Briones was clearly drunk when he got out of his car, and officers found a partially full bottle of vodka in the vehicle.

When Briones tried to drive away from the scene, leaving his passenger behind, a witness grabbed his keys from the ignition.

That’s when Briones tried to take cover in a cactus, where he later refused police demands and became hostile with paramedics and others, police said.

When Briones was in the police car, he refused to keep his pants on, police said.

Extremely Drunk “New Mexico Man” Has Sex with Woman While Driving, Crashes SUV, Abandons Naked, Injured, Sex Partner, And Flees
By Nicholas Stix on May 29, 2013 at 9:01pm

Thanks to reader-researcher RC for this one.

If “extremely drunk” is an ethnic code phrase, so is, he “tried to drive away after the crash and leave his passenger behind.” I was tempted to say chivalry is dead, but the truth is, with these guys it was never alive. If you asked Luis Briones who the girl was, would he even remember her name? Indeed, would he even have remembered the incident, had he not gotten arrested and had a bilingual public defender, at taxpayer expense, to tell him about it? And will yet another public charge come out of this fun coupling, which Briones will surely brag about to his buddies for years to come, assuming the girl survives her injuries?

The best comment, by far, was Michelle MacKenzie Morton’s:

Just glad they spelled ejected right or it might have been well "different."

A toddler was killed and her grandmother seriously injured on an Upper West Side sidewalk when a teenager fleeing the police drove into a building, then backed up over them, authorities said.

Cops initially pulled over Franklin Reyes, 18, on 86th and Amsterdam Avenue around 8:15 a.m., law-enforcement sources said.

When police approached the car, Reyes allegedly took off — leading cops on a pursuit up to 97th Street, where he took a hard left and plowed into the window of Asian Fusion Cuisine, according to authorities and witnesses.

He then backed up over the 3-year-old girl and her 58-year-old grandmother, cops said.

“I heard the noise, I came into the street,” said Chris Prostko, a super who lives nearby. “They were lying on the sidewalk in front of the crushed window.”

Witnesses said the child was unconscious and covered in blood, and the grandmother fading in and out of consciousness.

EMS rushed the two to St. Luke’s Hospital, but the young girl could not be saved.

Reyes was taken into custody at the scene. A police source said he was was arrested in June last year for armed robbery, and released without any bail being set.

He also has busts for pot and attempted robbery last year.

The area was crowded with parents and children this morning, who were disturbed by the scene.

“I cross this street everyday,” said Sherry Shermon, who was there with her 5-year-old boy. “I hold my children’s hands because this is a dangerous intersection."
