Danish researchers have been asked to study the authenticity of the Vinland Map, the earliest purported representation of Viking-era North America

Experts from the Royal Danish Library and the Royal Academy's Conservator School will depart on Saturday for Yale University in Connecticut for a weeklong study of the so-called Vinland Map.

The Vinland Map, which purportedly dates from the 1400's, is the first cartographic representation of North America. Vinland was the Viking term for North America, a continent they reached around the year 1000, four centuries before Columbus was credited with discovering the Americas.

Danish researchers will help to determine whether the Vinland Map, which Yale University acquired in 1957, is genuine or a fake.

While most experts agree that
the parchment on which the map is drawn dates from the 15th century, opini
on is divided over the exact age of the ink.
