Efforts to raise test scores raises tempers instead

A food fight in the Geeter Middle School cafeteria resulted in the suspension of almost 200 eighth grade students. "Food all over the place I really didn't know cause I ran out." At a school meeting Thursday a parent was arrested for acting up. "It doesn't matter how we tell them to act kids are going to do what we do," said Kelli Grissom with the Child Advocacy Center . Experts say what kids learn or don't learn at home has the potential to derail the education system. In a 2004 study students and parents agreed the number one behavior problem in schools, is parents failure to teach their children discipline. The second biggest problem; children bringing disresp
ect they learn outside the school into the classroom.
"Sounds like things are just a
mess at your school are they, yes Miss Meeks need to leave she need to go we need miss Beasley back, yea she's giving us a suspension for everything." When Geeter was put on a list of low performing schools much of the staff and the principal was replaced. But many parents and students have rejected efforts to make improvements. School administrators say for the plan to work parents must be on board. "And it's moving past the needs of your individual child to the needs of the entire school population," said Bernadeia Johnson with the Memphis City Schools. School officials say until parents and teachers can find a way to work as a team, the education of every child could suffer. Kelli Grissom from the Child Advocacy Center thinks the school principal did right thing and she says parents should be grateful that she took measures to correct this behavior that could have created a dangerous envi
ronment for all the students.

Parent arrested at school meeting was in court Friday

The Geeter Middle School food fight has gained nationwide notoriety and gotten more than just a few parents upset. We spoke to one parent arrested after he showed up for a meeting to discuss the food fight. Curtis Kirk was in court Friday after that meeting turned sour. Memphis police arrested Kirk on charges of disorderly conduct and inciting a riot. After his hearing Friday, Kirk told us he lost control because the whole situation is out of control. Kirk said, "We have no jurisdiction in the school over our own kids. We have no say so over our kids in the school." Kirk also told us he was upset that Thursday night's meeting was over so quickly. He spent Friday afternoon looking for an attorney and is due back in court next month
