PHOENIX - City Manager Frank Fairbanks and interim Police Chief Jack Harris will launch an investigation into whether the Phoenix Police Department had any role in the deportation of several juveniles to Mexico last month.

City officials met with about 15 Hispanic community leaders for more than two hours Monday about the March 28 incident, which has caused outrage among Latinos.

The conference, which took place in Mayor Phil Gordon's office, was described as "tense," although many said they were pleased that the city seemed to hear and understand their concerns.

"We had a lot of ange
and frustration, and we needed to get that out," said Rosie Lopez of the Arizona Hispanic Community Forum. "We never want to see that happen again."

Members of the Hispanic community say the government engaged in racial profiling when federal immigration officials rounded up at least eight Phoenix juveniles, some as young as 12, and sent them back to Mexico because they could not prove they were living in the United States legally.

The children were separated from their families in Phoenix when they were deported. Phoenix police maintain that they did not call immigration officials, but, at the direction Gordon, they will review reports from that night.
