Stepfather Accused Of Raping, Impregnating 12-Year-Old

DES MOINES, Iowa - Parma police have been working with Iowa investigators in the case of a girl allegedly being raped by her stepfather. Joseph Coles, 40, is accused of impregnating the girl twice, NewsChannel5 reported. Coles was charged with 242 counts, including kidnapping, rape, gross sexual imposition and endangering a child. He faces life in prison if convicted.

His wife, Dawn Coles, 36, was charged with five counts, including tampering
with evidence, obstructing justice and endangering children.
They were arrested at their home in West Des Moines Tuesday
after a nine-month investigation by Detectives Tom Connor and Dan Ciryak of the Parma Police Department.
Connor was contacted by the West Des Moines Police Department in July 2005 when they received a complaint from the 17-year-old victim. It was alleged that she was repeatedly the victim of sexual assaults by Coles between June 2002 and July 2004.
During this time period the victim was between 10 and 15 years of age. On two separate occasions, the victim became pregnant as the result of these attacks, the first time being at the age of 12, detectives said.
Parma detectives also said Joseph Coles threatened to kill the girl if she told on him.
Police said the couple lived in Des Moines for about a year.
Parma police are continuing their investigation.
Hope they had enough sense to abort.

Joseph Coles, 40, is at the center of the investigation. He's facing 242 counts including kidnapping, rape, gross sexual imposition, and endangering a child. Thirty seven of the charges carry the possibility of life in prison because police say some of the incidents took place before the victim turned thirteen. Joseph Coles was arrested Tuesday in Des Moines and made his first court appearance today.
Police say Coles' victim contacted West Des Moines police, who then contacted Ohio authorities where the victim once lived. Ohio police explain what they say happened to the victim. "She says this would happen about th
ree times a week and he threatened to kill her if she told anyone....she got pregnant twice.....when she was 12 years old," says Detective Marty Compton with the Parma, Ohio Police Department, "You get that sick feeling in your stomach...over and over and over."
Police say Coles' wife, Dawn, 36, is also involved. She faces five counts
including tampering with evidence and obstruction of justice. Police say the Coles lived in Des Moines for about a year. Joseph Coles is set to be extradited to Ohio, where the first abuse took place.
