"DORAL, Fla. -- Police arrested a woman Monday who they said slammed her car into a child who was walking to school on May 5, killing him as he walked along a sidewalk.
Ali Landdahetta, 33, is charged with vehicular homicide in the death of 8-year-old Shaye Patrick Martin.
According to police, Landdahetta, who was driving a 2004 Volkswagen Jetta, tried to weave between two cars on 114th Avenue at about 7:15 a.m. when she lost control of her vehicle, causing it to hit the median, spin out into the opposite direction of traffic and onto the sidewalk where the boy was walking.
Police and witnesses said that Landdahetta was speeding.
"It's just unfortunate that this young lady here decided to take that sort of an action to get around two vehicles and it cost a young child his life," Miam
i-Dade police Detective Bobby Williams said.
Landdahetta bonded out of the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on Monday night.
Landdahetta's attorney, Jonathan Schwartz:zflagburn:, said that his client is "torn apart and feels remorseful about what happened, but that it was an accident"
