900 Philly Teachers Apply For Early Retirement
Teachers Lured By $50K Over 5 Years

UPDATED: 2:55 PM EDT April 17, 2004

PHILADELPHIA -- Nine hundred Philadelphia schoolteachers want to retire under a special incentive plan.

This number is about 7 percent of the system's teachers, and could be the largest exodus of teachers in recent years.

Teachers retiring under the plan will get $50,000 over five years.

The Philadelphia School District sees the plan as a way to save money by replacing highly paid veterans with begin
ers. Senior teachers earn about $75,000 a year. Rookie teachers earn about $38,000.

The savings from the retiring teachers will be used to reduce class sizes, officials say.
