PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) - Three people are dead and six others are injured after a crash involving a stolen car in Phoenix early Friday morning.
The crash happened just before 2 a.m near 43rd Avenue and Thunderbird Road. According to Phoenix police, a car was about to turn left on Thunderbird Road when it was hit by a speeding car traveling north on 43rd Avenue. When fire crews arrived, the car that was crashed into was on fire. Firefighters quickly put out the flames.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Melissa Soliz says all three people, believed to be adults, who were in the car that was turning left were killed.
Six people, ranging from teenagers to young adults, were in the stolen car.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for the three victims.

The intersection of 43rd Avenue and Thunderbird Road was previously shut down for several hours, but reopened just before 3 p.m. The investigation is ongoing.

Terry was hit by a stolen vehicle with 6 teenagers and young adults at 2 am Friday morning while out driving Lyft proving for his family. Due to the sudden impact, his vehicle instantly went into flames killing him and his two passengers instantly.

PHOENIX - Police say a driver in a stolen vehicle crashed into another car, killing three people during the early-morning hours of July 22 in north Phoenix.

The Phoenix Fire Department initially responded to the scene at around 2 a.m. near 43rd Avenue and Thunderbird and found multiple crashed cars, with one fully engulfed in flames.

Six people who were inside the stolen car – teenagers and young adults – were transported to hospitals in serious condition.

Phoenix Police say the stolen car was speeding on 43rd Avenue when it crashed into another car that was making a left turn onto Thunderbird.

All three people inside the other car that was making the left turn died at the scene. Their identities have not been released by authorities, but they are believed to be adults.

Loved ones say the driver is Terry Hill and that he was a Lyft driver, and the GoFundMe set up for Hill says he was driving for the rideshare company that night to provide for his wife and their son. He was reportedly on his last ride of the night.

Sara Loustaunau was reportedly one of Hill's passengers, and her boyfriend says she was just picked up, and they live in the area. We still don't know the third victim's name.

"Inside that stolen vehicle were six people, they ranged from teenagers to young adults; those six people were transported to local hospitals with serious injuries," Sgt. Melissa Soliz said. "The vehicle that erupted into flames we believe to be three adults, however, they have not been identified at this point. Those three people did die from their injuries."

A spokesperson with Lyft issued a statement on the incident, which reads:

"We are heartbroken by this incident. Our hearts are with the victim's loved ones during this incredibly difficult time and we've reached out to offer our support. We are ready to assist law enforcement however we can."

At a vigil a day later, loved ones spoke about the impact Hill had on their lives.

"He was always the life of the party. We always have fun with him and that’s what we remember him by," his sister Jada Hill said.

"He told me he was going to come over after work and visit me and his newborn nephew. Literally, a month old, two months next week and he wanted to visit with us and spend time with us. He will be missed. He was a great dad," Alonzo Akins, his brother, said.

One of Hill's friends felt like he was nothing short of a big brother.

When asked if he would be where he is today without Hill's mentorship, his response was, "To be honest, no. Because I wouldn’t have graduated high school and kept doing positive things without him. He used to call me if I was out at like two in the morning. He’d pull up on me and take me back home. He was just like a big brother. He looked out for everybody around him."

As the investigation continues, questions over liability are starting to come into focus, and FOX 10's Nicole Garcia spoke with a lawyer over the additional complications that could come when a rideshare vehicle is involved in a crash similar to this one.

PHOENIX - As an investigation into a deadly crash in north Phoenix continues, questions of who is financially liable for the crash are starting to surface.

The incident happened near 43rd Avenue and Thunderbird. According to initial statements, Phoenix Fire Department crews responded to the scene at around 2 a.m. on July 22, and found multiple crashed cars, with one fully engulfed in flames.


Phoenix Police officials said a stolen car was speeding on 43rd Avenue when it crashed into another car that was making a left turn onto Thunderbird. All three people inside the other car that was making the left turn died at the scene.

One of the people who died, according to loved ones, is Terry Hill. Hill was working as a Lyft driver at the time of the crash, and the GoFundMe set up for Hill says he was driving for the rideshare company that night to provide for his wife and their son. Hill was reportedly on his last ride of the night when the crash happened.



The other two people who died were reportedly Hill's passengers.

Two of the three families in this tragedy have set up GoFundMe accounts to raise money for funeral expenses, and to take care of the children that are now left without one of their parents.

Questions now raised over liability​


According to a Phoenix area attorney, more and more Lyft and Uber passengers are lawyering up after getting hurt in a car accident during their ride.

"These accidents, we have seen an uptick. We see it almost on a weekly basis," said David Shapiro.

Investigators said in this particular incident, the driver of the stolen car appears to be at fault. Shapiro detailed the potential complications in this particular case.

"Because it was a stolen vehicle, there's probably no applicable insurance," said Shapiro.

In most car accident cases, the injured driver can sue another driver who is at fault. However, in cases like this, since it was not the rideshare driver’s fault, the rideshare company may not be liable for their customers injuries, or even death.

"They do have liability insurance, it’s true, but if you’re inside the Lyft or Uber, the driver is not at fault. They’re not required to carry UIM insurance for their occupants," said Shapiro.

Shapiro said frequent riders should have both uninsured motorist and underinsured motorists coverage on their own car insurance policies, which would help with unexpected expenses and losses that rideshare companies and other drivers do not cover.

"Those are things you can’t replace. It’s not a car. It’s a human body," said Shapiro. "If you have a big ticket hospital bill, surgeries you need in the future, some health insurance won’t cover accident related expenses."

On October 27, 2022 detectives arrested two people who were identified as racing prior to the fatal collision that occurred in the early morning of July 22, 2022 at 43rd Avenue and Thunderbird Road that left four dead.

Detectives have been working vigorously to identify the driver of the stolen vehicle who collided into another vehicle, killing the driver and two passengers, who were identified as Terry Hill, Sara Loustaunau, and British Pena, in the intersection of 43rd Avenue and Thunderbird Road back in July 2022. The stolen vehicle was occupied by six teenagers. All six occupants were transported to the hospital with serious injuries. One of the passengers, identified as 19-year-old :poop:Galexy Saunders :poop: later died at the hospital.
During the investigation it was determined the stolen vehicle was racing a dark colored sedan going north on 43rd Avenue prior to the collision. The stolen vehicle occupied by six, crashed into an uninvolved vehicle making a left turn at the intersection. The vehicle caught fire and three people died. The dark colored sedan continued north and did not remain on scene. Through investigative techniques detectives were able to determine which of the six teenagers in the stolen vehicle was driving at the time of the collision. Detectives were also able to determine the driver of the dark colored sedan.
On October 27, 2022 after the investigation was completed, officers located and arrested the driver of the dark colored sedan and the person identified as driving the stolen vehicle at the time of the collision. The driver of the dark colored sedan was identified as a teenage female. The driver of the stolen vehicle was identified as a teenage male. Both drivers were booked into the Juvenile Correction Center on multiple felony charges.
