Car dealership owners shot dead in Cleveland

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A couple was shot dead inside their car dealership Friday night, police say.

The shooting happened just after 10 p.m. at Mr. Car Sales auto dealership on East 185th Street between Hiller and Schenely avenues, Cleveland police spokeswoman Jennifer Ciaccia said.

No arrests have been made.

A news release from Cleveland City Council identifies the victims as 45-year-old Trina Kuznik and 50-year-old Michael Kuznik. They both suffered a gunshot wound to the head. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Robbers who killed the owners of a car dealership on the city's East Side stole surveillance equipment, killed the woman as she tried to run out of a back door and shot the family dog, Cleveland police said at a press conference Friday.

Deputy Cleveland Police Chief Ed Tomba said that investigators believe the business was targeted, meaning the incident that left Michael Kuznik and Trina Tomola dead was more calculated than just a random robbery and car theft.

The family dog, Axel, might provide clues as investigators believe that it might have bitten one of the robbers, and its mouth might contain his or her DNA.

Cleveland officials announced a suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder of two owners of a car dealership on the city's east side in April.

Joseph McAlphine, 29, is in police custody Tuesday.

Michael and Trina Kuznik were brutally murdered on April 14 at their business on East 185th Street.

Both victims were shot in the head.

McAlphine previously served nine years in prison for aggravated robbery and was released in 2016.

The Homicide Unit believes that there is at least one other, if not more involved in this crime.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Two more suspects are charged in the April 14 slaying of a couple at their used-car business in Cleveland's Collinwood neighborhood.

Jerome Diggs Jr., 23, and Andrew Keener, 24, both of Cleveland, are each charged with aggravated murder in the deaths of Michael Kuznik, 47, and Trina Tomola, 46, officials announced at a Monday news conference.

Joseph McAlpin sentenced to death for murdering couple during robbery at Cleveland car dealership; appeal expected

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - The man convicted of killing a couple who owned a car dealership in Cleveland was sentenced to death by Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas Judge Brian Corrigan on Tuesday.



Joseph McAlpin was sentenced for 10 charges, including two counts of aggravated murder, stemming from the deadly robbery in April of 2017.

On May 16, the jury assigned to McAlpin’s trial deliberated for approximately 30 minutes before recommending the death sentence as punishment. Judge Corrigan honored the jury’s recommendation by finding capital punishment fit for McAlpin’s crimes.

After learning his fate, McAlpin indicated that he intends to appeal the death sentencing. A panel of judges will now be appointed to hear McAlpin’s appeal.

McAlpin was convicted in April of killing Trina Tomola, Michael Kuznik, and their dog at the married couple’s car dealership, Mr. Cars, on East 185th Street in 2017. The couple’s son found their bodies later that evening.

Several cars and cash were also stolen.

McAlpin represented himself throughout the trial, which began on March 18.
