WHITEHALL, Ohio — The Whitehall Division of Police arrested three teenage girls involving a stolen car earlier this week.

Officers got an alert from the city's Flock security cameras on Tuesday to a stolen car in the area. Officers arrested three girls, ages 13, 14 and 16, who police said drove the stolen car to a store so they could shoplift.

“When we recover these cars, these teens that are actually out committing other crimes,” said Whitehall Police Sergeant Jon Earl.

Earl said his department is seeing more and more young girls involved in crimes.

“It's actually getting to be more and more common,” Earl said.

In all of last year, Whitehall police arrested 34 teen girls for receiving stolen property, which is the charge used in stolen car offenses. They have already arrested six so far this year.

Another incident happened on Wednesday when police stopped a car that didn't have a license plate on it. Two teens, armed with guns, ran from the car.

A 16-year-old girl had a stolen handgun and threw it once officers started running after her.

Earl said he's concerned one of the young girls is going to end up hurting themselves or someone else. He said he doesn't understand why there's been a slight increase.

"The one's we keep arresting over and over, there's really no repercussions for what they are doing at this point," Earl said.
