Four suspects are wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of an Upper Darby High School student on a SEPTA bus in West Philadelphia over the weekend, police said Monday.

The shooting in the area of 40th Street and Girard Avenue stemmed from a fight and left Zahkir Whitfield, a 10th grade student at Upper Darby High School, dead.

Police said the four suspects fled westbound on Girard Avenue toward 41st Street after the shooting. Three of them boarded the bus in the area of Girard and Ridge avenues, according to police. The fourth suspect joined them on the bus later, police said.

Whitfield was shot in the chest and taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead just after 1:15 p.m. Saturday, police said.

Philadelphia police said they're offering a $20,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction for the homicide.

"He was a good kid"

On Monday, friends and former classmates of Whitfield at Upper Darby High School said they were still processing the loss.

CJ Harley, 18, said he used to coach Whitfield through the Philadelphia Youth Basketball (PYB) league, where Whitfield played point guard.

"For him to be like my little brother — because that's how we look at each other, as brothers — for it to be him, it was heartbreaking," Harley said.

Harley added that Whitfield was a talented basketball player and a friend with whom he shared a close bond.

"How I would describe him is, he was chill, laid back, relaxed, mature," Harley said. "Stayed to himself. Fun — we used to have fun. He'd make his friends laugh, make people laugh."

A teenage suspect accused of fatally shooting an Upper Darby High School student on a SEPTA bus in West Philadelphia last month has been arrested, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

U.S. Marshals said Zayki Davis, 17, was arrested Thursday at an apartment complex in Norristown, Pennsylvania. Davis is facing murder charges.

Davis is accused of shooting and killing 15-year-old Zahkir Whitfield, a 10th-grade Upper Darby High School student, after a fight on a SEPTA bus in the area of 40th Street and Girard Avenue in West Philadelphia on Saturday, March 22.

The Philadelphia Police Department identified Davis as the alleged shooter on March 26.

Police allege a group of teenagers was involved in a fight aboard a SEPTA Route G bus along the Route 15 trolley lines around 1 p.m. on March 22.

Investigators claim that when the driver stopped the bus, Davis exited the vehicle through its rear door and fired once back into the bus, striking Whitfield in the chest.

Whitfield was rushed to a Philadelphia hospital, where he later died.

Anthony Overstreet, Whitfield's grandfather, said Davis' arrest is a prayer answered.

"I felt relief," Overstreet said. "Jail is not a place for anybody, but I think justice has been served. Another wasted life. Another child's wasted life. They say it's a war on drugs. A war overseas, but it's a war on our kids right now. Kids killing kids. It's a war on our kids."

Overstreet said his grandson loved to play basketball and swim. He said Davis' arrest could never ease the pain of his loss, but he added it does give him hope that the people responsible will be held accountable.

"They caught him. They caught him," Overstreet said. "But it doesn't ease my heart any."

Police are continuing to search for three others wanted in connection with Whitfield's death. Police are asking anyone with information about the case to contact them.
