Anti-Asian hate crimes spiked 567% in San Francisco in 2021
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...isco-2021-One-man-responsible-31-attacks.html

Anti-Asian hate crimes spiked 567% in San Francisco in 2021: One man who targeted Chinese-owned businesses committed more than half the attacks in just five months before his arrest last August

  • Preliminary numbers indicated hate crimes targeting Asian American and Pacific Islander in San Francisco went from nine in 2020 to 60 in 2021
  • That represents an over 500 percent increase, although officials believe the actual numbers are higher because people are reluctant to report to the police
  • Police believe that 36-year-old Derik Barreto, who was arrested last August is responsible for 31-more than half- of the incidents reported last year
  • Reports of anti-Asian hate crimes in San Francisco increased more than any other category of hate crime last year
  • Anh Lê, an elderly Asian American man who was attacked two years ago in San Francisco announced he was suing the DA's office over mishandling his case

Markynn West Arrest: Group took road rage victim's keys, punched him in the head before deadly shooting

FORT WORTH, Texas - Newly released documents provide more details about a minor crash that ended with violence and the death of a leader of the Dallas-Fort Worth Asian American community.

Fort Worth police arrested 28-year-old Markynn West earlier this week for the murder of 43-year-old Jin Shin.

It happened on the morning of Aug. 15 after a minor traffic accident near South University Drive and the Interstate 30 westbound entrance ramp.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Shin was driving a Jeep Cherokee. He rolled forward at a red light and hit the bumper of a silver Honda Elantra that had three women inside.

The two drivers opened their doors to check on the damage. The three women got out of the Elantra and approached Shin’s Jeep. The affidavit states Shin was boxed into his vehicle door by the females.

Several more people arrived in other cars to support the three women. West was one of those people, according to the affidavit.

"There were seven people gathered around Shin," the police document states.

Fort Worth police believe a minor crash turned into an argument between the people in two cars. One person opened fire and shot the other driver.

Security video from the area showed that as Shin stood outside his Jeep the confrontation escalated into a physical fight. West got into his face and another person punched him in the back of the head.

Shin backed away from the fight and retrieved a handgun from the passenger side of his Jeep. Around the same time, West went back to his car and got his own gun, the affidavit states.

By that point, someone in the group had taken Shin’s keys and they were blocking his access to the Jeep.

Shin tried to get to his vehicle, and that’s when West fired multiple shots, according to the affidavit.

"Shin retreated around the front of the accident to the passenger side of the vehicles. Markynn pursued him, also moving around to the passenger side of the vehicles but behind the accident. As he came around the vehicles, he raised both arms and extended the handgun toward Shin. He fired multiple shots again," the arrest warrant affidavit states.

Shin tried to run away but collapsed and died.

Fort Worth police said West remained at the scene until police arrived. He was later arrested and charged with murder based on the outcome of the investigation.

It’s not clear if anyone else involved in the fight will face charges.

Nikki Senephoumy is reflecting on her dear friend, who she describes as a leader in North Texas —especially in the Asian American community.

"He was an amazing friend, very loyal and very giving. Has a huge heart," she said. "Everybody looked up to him for advice because he gave great business advice."

The pair met in Dallas at Shin’s business, Encore Family Karaoke. And as a fellow business owner, they bonded over navigating through the pandemic.

"We started talking about figuring out ways to survive COVID and make money," she said.

Senephoumy says she can’t comprehend what happened to her friend.

"Just imagining him there by himself," she said. "Eight against one. How is that fair? I’m not gonna be satisfied until all of those involved are arrested."

According to a GoFundMe page set up for his family, he was the co-owner of a Korean restaurant in Dallas and recently took over his family’s karaoke business. He provided meals to the homeless and helped raise money for others in the community, including the women injured in the Korean hair salon shooting in Dallas earlier this year.

He leaves behind a girlfriend and a 14-year-old daughter.

Update from Jin's family:

It is with immense grief to let all of you know that the Tarrant County DA's office will let the shooter claim self defense and dismiss the case, if it's not already done. Additionally, the ADA presented the three others charged with murder on 3/22 to the grand jury and were no billed, meaning they are dismissed of their charges. The ones that punched Jin will get misdemeanors for assault. We do not agree with this as they led us to believe for all these months they were working hard on this case.

The ADA says because Jin pulled his gun on them, it allowed the shooter to get and use his gun and claim self defense, even if the opinion was that Jin's life was in imminent danger to use deadly force too. Before any gun was involved, a minor fender bender early in the morning led to that car of 3 women to call 5 other people for "back up". Jin was then surrounded and brutally assaulted by 2 of the 8 by punches to his head. From the footage, three individuals rummaged through Jin's vehicle and prevented him from leaving by stealing his keys. He was able to finally gain access to one of the passenger doors and get a hold of his gun to defend himself. Jin pointed a gun at them briefly, but then kept the gun down. The shooter took his opportunity in that moment to shoot multiple shots and kill as he actively pursued Jin as he tried to run away.

A repeat offender accused of sucker punching an elderly Asian man in Chicago’s Chinatown four years ago was found guilty of battery charges Wednesday.
In the unprovoked attack, Alexander Taylor struck 91-year-old Yen Jit Wong in the 2400 block of South Wentworth in Rogers Park on Sept. 18, 2018, sending the long-time Chinatown resident into the ICU with what was feared to be permanent brain damage.
Wong was walking home alone after having lunch with his son when Taylor punched him with a closed fist.
An off-duty police officer witnessed the attack and called for backup.

“He was ranting, wild, violent hand gestures, screaming at the sky, the sidewalk,” Sgt. Michael Bazarek, whose family has more than 100 years of police service between them, told WLS. “As I thought that to myself, I saw this guy strike out at the elderly Asian male, knocking him right to the pavement.”
Bazarek immediately arrested Taylor as bystanders rushed to help. Wong was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hos‌pit‌al‌ and later moved to a rehab facility, where he underwent physical therapy.
Following his arrest, Taylor reportedly spat on a police officer and smeared feces on the walls of his cell. He was eventually placed on psychiatric hold, which authorities said was not the first time.

Taylor was found guilty of aggravated battery of a victim over 60 and aggravated battery in a public place.

His records show a 2008 sentencing for aggravated battery after he attacked a nurse and a 60-year-old security guard while staying in a psychiatric ward, according to the Chicago Tribune.

He was also convicted of attempted murder in 1998, which resulted in a six-year prison sentence. At the time, he cut his victim with a knife in the hand, chest and shoulder.
Taylor will return to court on March 28.

A man accused of carrying out a string of attacks against Asian New Yorkers was remanded on hate crime charges in Manhattan on Friday, following a years-long cycle through the system that apparently saw him slip through the cracks of city and state-funded programs designed to aid defendants with a mental illness.

Clive Porter, 33, was arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court, charged with committing assault, attempted assault, and grand larceny as hate crimes and related offenses for the alleged incidents on Wednesday that left a group of people terrorized.

Prosecutors from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office allege Porter set out on a spree of violence, punching or forcefully elbowing three elderly people and pickpocketing another person within a span of 15 minutes after 9:35 a.m. Wednesday.

After 4 p.m., he allegedly punched a man who’d just gotten off a J train at the Bowery subway station, bloodying his nose and causing cuts and bruises, after screaming slurs.

The man, stunned by the assault, fell back onto the subway tracks after Porter allegedly fled the scene, according to authorities. He managed to hoist himself up and flag down the police.

All of the victims were of Asian descent, and nobody was seriously injured, according to the NYPD.

Friday’s charges represent the most serious Porter has faced out of dozens of arrests in recent years, according to a Daily News review of his record. On at least 12 occasions, police determined he had a mental illness or was emotionally distressed, according to the NYPD.

Speaking to the Daily News after Friday’s proceedings, Porter’s public defender, Joseph Payne, said his client had a prescription for psychiatric medication, but that it had been stolen or misplaced in the days leading to the alleged attacks.

“He was without access to medication for the last couple days, and now, here we are,” Payne said.

One of the key debates in the current mayoral race has been how to handle people with severe mental illness entangled in the criminal justice system.

Porter’s experiences, like those of so many defendants constantly cycling through the worn-out revolving door in arraignments, expose glaring shortcomings in city- and state-funded programs that exist for treating, monitoring, and rehabilitating repeat offenders living in extreme poverty with poorly treated or untreated mental illness, and in the jails themselves.

Zohran Mamdani, Curtis Sliwa, and former Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

In the four years preceding Wednesday’s alleged incidents, prosecutors and judges in Brooklyn and Manhattan have taken turns confronting Porter’s issues.

The East Midwood, Brooklyn, man, who is set to turn 34 in two weeks, served two jail sentences, apparently returning to sleeping on the streets both times after his release, and at least twice has been ordered to comply with the city’s supervised release program.

In August 2021, he was arrested for hurling a bottle through the front window of a woman’s car, shattering it as she drove down Nostrand Ave. near President St. in Crown Heights and leaving her with cuts on her arms and stomach.

The case was referred to Brooklyn’s mental health court in November 2023, where Porter was ordered to comply with a court-mandated treatment program and pleaded guilty to attempted assault in September, a court official told The News. He faces two to four years in prison when he is sentenced in that case on Nov. 12.

The mental health courts, which tailor case outcomes to treat people’s specific needs, have seen strong results but receive little funding from the city and state and are available only to a select few.

In an interview with The News, Porter’s mother, a 61-year-old home health aide who did not wish to be named, said that he doesn’t find himself in trouble when he’s taking his medication. She said she last saw him the Friday before Wednesday’s alleged attacks, when he had the meds he picks up each month from a pharmacy near her home, and she gave him $60 for some food.

“He’s nice. He’s a nice person. He’s a good person,” Porter’s mother said through tears.

“When he don’t take his medication, he goes off,” she later added. “When he takes the medication, he’s fine.”

After a year with no arrests, police took Porter into custody in Manhattan following incidents in February and March 2023 regarding misdemeanor tampering and aggravated assault offenses. He was sentenced to five months in jail the following June after taking a plea deal.

Shortly after his release, he was arrested in Brooklyn for a graffiti incident on Valentine’s Day 2024 and subsequently pleaded guilty, receiving a conditional discharge. The following Halloween, he was arrested for striking a man in the pinky with an ice pick following a verbal dispute that turned into a physical fight in lower Manhattan. He was sentenced to six months in jail after pleading guilty in that case.

This September, Porter was arrested again in Brooklyn for allegedly smoking a K2 cigarette on the southbound L train platform at Broadway Junction. At his arraignment, a judge ordered him to comply with the city’s supervised release program.

He was arrested less than a month later, on Oct. 14, for allegedly threatening two men with knives in the Times Square subway system. He was arraigned on non-bail-eligible offenses and ordered by a Manhattan judge to comply with the city’s supervised release program.

It was not clear from prosecutors or court records whether Porter had complied with the city’s supervised release program. The Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice manages the program’s contracts. When participants don’t comply, operators are supposed to contact defense attorneys. If the lawyers can’t speak to their clients’ whereabouts, operators are required to notify all parties.

Bragg’s office did not respond to inquiries about whether it had ever referred Porter to the mental health courts, as prosecutors had in Brooklyn.

Porter’s mom on Friday said he had been employed as a cashier many years ago, but that mental health issues and drug addiction had totally derailed him. She expressed frustration at the mishmash of outcomes in his cases and the lack of consistent treatment available.

Distraught at the prospect of her son going to jail, Porter’s mother said she feared his psychiatric condition would go untreated and inevitably get worse.

“If you are the judge and you see this person coming in every time, you see something wrong with him,” she said.

“I’m begging these people to help him. He’s my only son.”
