Five people were killed on a Florida expressway when their car was hit head-on by a wrong-way driver — who had his license revoked nearly a decade ago, according to a report.
Maiky Simeon, 30, was driving east in the westbound lanes of the Palmetto Expressway near Miami in an Infiniti sedan around 4:30 a.m. Saturday when he smashed head-on into a Honda sedan.
Everyone inside the sedan — four women and one man ranging in age from 18 to 25 — was killed in the wreck, authorities said. None of them have been publicly identified.

Images from the scene show both cars badly damaged after coming to rest in the roadway.
Simeon was badly injured and remains hospitalized as detectives try to piece together where he was prior to the crash.
According to the Miami Herald, Simeon has not been in possession of a valid driver’s license since 2014, when he was busted for going 109 miles per hour.
Despite that, records show that he continued to drive and rack up violations, including speeding, running red lights and failing to yield at an intersection.
The outlet also reported that a prior girlfriend described him as “psychotic” and “obsessive” in seeking out a restraining order.

Police release new image of man wanted in West Philly hit-and-run that left little girl critically wounded

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A plea for help after a hit-and-run crash leaves a little girl fighting for her life. Now, police have revealed a new clue in the search for the driver accused of hitting the girl, her little sister and the family friend who was with them.

As that 5-year-old girl remains in critical condition, police hope someone recognizes a suspect who was captured on camera moments before the incident.

Philadelphia police want you to take a close look at the man seen in this security video wearing a grey T-shirt and appearing to limp when he walks.

Police released the video late Tuesday afternoon, saying he's involved in a hit-and-run. But so far officers only have a nickname. The man is known as "Dre," but police need help identifying the man's full name.

"My niece is suffering," Elsie Jackson said.

Jackson says her 5-year-old niece Divinity McFarland remains in critical condition after a driver struck her and two others as they were crossing busy 56th and Vine Streets back on Sept. 2.

"We have little small victories every day," Jackson said, "but we're waking for her to wake up and it's just hard."

Little Divinity was with her 3-year-old sister and a family friend, 43-year-old Shaheed Richberg, who was taking them to McDonald's for lunch at the time. Now, Richberg remains in the hospital with a long road to recovery, according to his mother.

"I thought he wasn't, I thought he wasn't gonna be here no more," Tina Richberg said. "Because the truck rolled over him."

Police say the driver was in this red pickup truck. Officers found the truck abandoned a few blocks from the scene, but police have not been able to find the driver.

"You kept going. You didn't even stop to see how they were doing," Richberg said.

Police previously released this security image of the man they believe was behind the wheel of the pickup but whose name is still unknown to authorities.

"Somebody had to see him that day. Just call," Jackson said. "Any little bit can help us find the guy that did this to them. And he can suffer the consequences."

Divinity's young sister is home and in stable condition. Her family says they're praying divinity will wake up, recover and be reunited with her sister.

WILDWOOD, N.J. (CBS) -- Wildwood residents are angry Sunday night about chaos on the streets that killed two people and injured several others. Illegal sideshows took over Saturday night.

Residents are now demanding action.

An illegal auto event in Wildwood killed two people and left several others injured.

The series of car crashes on Saturday night are leaving Wildwood residents and visitors heartbroken over the lives lost.

"You come here for fun, and you end up dying and now they're planning a funeral," Janice Jeffery, a Wildwood resident, said. "It's just not right."

"The accidents, the drinking, it was catastrophic on Atlantic Avenue in Wildwood last night," Phillip Helmbold, a lifetime Wildwood resident, said.

Police say an unsanctioned car event led to the death of an 18-year-old Lindsay Weakland and a 34-year-old Timothy Ogden along with several others injured.

In a video above, Catherine Colby captured one of the chaotic scenes at Burk and Atlantic Avenues.

"It looked like a car just racing down the road 90 miles an hour," Colby, a Wildwood resident, said. "It was a clear street. A car went through to cross over and they collided and everything went up in the air."

Officials say they arrested 37-year-old Gerald J. White after he fled the scene. Officials say White was charged with two counts of death by auto, two counts of assault by auto, one count of eluding, one count of leaving the scene of an accident and one count of violation of laws to protect public safety.

The Wildwood community is heartbroken after a series of car crashes last night.

"The cops were trying their hardest to control it, but the groups were too big and they outnumbered the cops," a woman said.

The board of commissioners released a statement saying they have been monitoring the unsanctioned H2Oi event all weekend.

They say the city's mayor spoke with Gov. Phil Murphy to call in additional support to help the officers.

"I think that the mayor owes us residents at least the consideration to come out here an explain to us what happened in our community," Helmbold said.

In between the damage from the deadly crash, resident Janice Jeffery took it upon herself to start a small memorial in honor of those lost.

"It's just not right," Jeffrey said. "She didn't deserve to die because someone was somebody careless. She was just walking and gets killed."

The Brooklyn driver who accidentally knocked down his girlfriend as she got into his car, fatally putting her in the path of another vehicle, has been busted for having a suspended license, cops said Monday.
Oddly Michel, 48, didn’t realize his 46-year-old girlfriend was trying to climb into his Jeep Cherokee at St. John’s Place and Rochester Avenue in Crown Heights just after 2 a.m. Sunday when he started driving off — causing her to fall into the street, cops said.
The woman — whose name has not been released pending family notification — was then struck by the driver of a black SUV on St. Johns Place, cops said. The SUV driver fled, police said.
The woman was taken to Kings County Hospital and declared dead, according to police.
Michel stayed at the scene and was cuffed when cops discovered he was driving with a suspended license, authorities said.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Philadelphia Police Department has identified the suspected driver wanted in connection to a hit-and-run in West Philadelphia last month. The crash left three people hurt, including a 5-year-old girl who remains in the hospital.
The young girl's family says she is still in the hospital with multiple serious injuries. Her family held a prayer circle for her outside of their West Philly home Monday afternoon.
Now, for the first time, police have identified the alleged hit-and-run driver.
andre-shuford.png

Police say 53-year-old Andre Shuford is the man they suspect as the driver of a pickup truck in a hit-and-run that happened at 56th and Vine Streets on Sept. 2.
Officers say Shuford was captured on camera moments before the crash, which injured four people, including 5-year-old Divinity McFarland.
"She had a severe brain injury," Elsie Johnson, Divinity's aunt, said, "and from that, she wasn't able to wake up for a good while."

Johnson says her niece was struck with so much force from the crash it initially left her in a coma.

"Today, she is starting to open her eyes," Johnson said. "Her one eye opens up and she's able to look around. So we talk to her to reassure her that we're there so that she knows that we're there."
But the young girl still cannot speak.
Kathy Selli is her grandmother.

"It's really sad for us to sit every day in the hospital," Selli said, "and for us to see her and she's in a lot of pain and there's nothing we can do to help her."
Shaheed Richburg, 43, was also struck in the crash. He still cannot walk on his own.
Two other children who were also hurt in the incident are home and doing OK.
Police say there is an active arrest warrant out for Shuford, who is believed to be known to parts of North Philadelphia and Kensington.
"Turn yourself in," Johnson said. "You've been walking around every day for a month while my little one cannot do the same, sitting in the hospital for a month, not doing anything. And it's not fair. Someone knows where he is. Please turn him in."
Police urge anyone with information about the suspected driver's whereabouts to call 911.

More On: car crashes

The four teenagers killed in a Buffalo car crash while attempting a TikTok challenge encouraging car theft have been identified — with a young mom among the victims.
Marcus Webster, 19, Swazine Swindle, 17, Kevin Payne, 16, and Ahjanae Harper, 14, were killed when the stolen Kia they were riding in crashed Monday morning, ejecting them and one other passenger, WGRZ reporter Claudine Ewing confirmed Tuesday.
The driver, 16, was treated at the hospital and released, while a fifth passenger, a 14-year-old girl, is listed in good condition at Erie County Medical Center.
In a video shared on Twitter, a local says Harper had recently welcomed a baby girl.
“She was a young mother,” the man remembers. “She definitely spent a lot of time with her daughter.”
Harper was set to celebrated her 15th birthday on Nov. 1. Her family launched a $15,000 GoFundMe in her honor on Tuesday.
Swindle’s sister, Nashira Anderson, told WIBV that the teen enjoyed playing basketball and was known for his goofy personality.

Webster, meanwhile, is said to have been a hard worker who juggled school and a job.
The driver of the Kia, which was reported stolen Sunday night, has since been charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle and criminal possession of the stolen property. He is due back in court in November.
The teens are believed to have wrecked the car while trying to complete the “Kia challenge,” a TikTok trend that shows viewers how to hot-wire Kias and Hyundais.

Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia told reporters Monday that law enforcement has seen a spike in car thefts since the challenge went viral. Even so, experts remain skeptical that an online dare can inspire random people to commit an illegal act.
“Isolating a specific video that seems detrimental, and assuming that it has a huge impact over people’s behavior, is just unreasonable from an empirical point of view. That’s not how media effects work,” Yotam Ophir, an assistant professor in the University at Buffalo communication department, told WIBV.
“Most people don’t know about these challenges, most people don’t care about these challenges, and even if they watch these videos and find them amusing, it doesn’t mean they’re going to walk out and steal a car.”

The investigation into the accident remains ongoing.

“We certainly send our deepest condolences and sympathies to all the families, and everyone impacted by this unfortunate and horrific tragedy,” the Buffalo Public School District stated in the wake of the crash.

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -- A Phoenix man is accused of speeding and causing a rear-end crash that seriously injured another man trying to get a broken car out of the road over the weekend. On Friday, police say three people were trying to push a Mazda out of the road because the driver had broken down near 27th Avenue and Beardsley Road. A Camry was parked behind the Mazda, and two people were pushing the back of the Mazda while another person was near the driver’s side. However, investigators say 43-year-old Rodney Scott McCullough was speeding when he lost control and rear-ended the Camry. The impact pushed the Camry into the Mazda, and one man who was behind the Mazda was hit. Investigators say the man had severe leg injuries, and his legs will most likely be amputated. The two other people weren’t hurt. After the crash, McCullough’s car burst into flames, and he ran away from the scene, police said.

On Monday, McCullough turned himself in and was taken into custody. Court documents say he admitted to speeding right before the crash and knew he should’ve stayed at the scene but got scared. Police found out that he was going between 50-55 miles per hour, but the speed limit in the area was 30-35 miles per hour, court paperwork says.
McCullough was booked on three counts of endangerment, one count of failure to stay, and one count of aggravated assault. He also had an outstanding warrant for DUI, police said.

Heartbreaking photos show five children killed in NY crash

The father of the teen driver in a fatal Scarsdale crash said he warned his son not to drive as heartbreaking images emerged of the young victims.
“I told him, his mother told him, his older brothers told him, stop driving without a license, without a permit,” the teen’s father, also named Malik Smith, told CBS News.
“Anything happens, you get pulled over, you get in trouble for these things. Stop doing this.”
Smith and four other young relatives were killed when 16-year-old Smith crashed off a Scarsdale parkway in the early hours of Sunday.
Pictures of those that perished — between ages 8 and 17 — emerged in a series of social media posts by their parents as well as a fundraiser seeking help for their collective funerals.
Dad Anthony Billips called it “the most painful post I ever had to write in my life” as he revealed he, his wife, ex-wife and sister had “lost our precious kids in a fatal car accident.”
“Six kids [were] in the car only one survived,” he wrote of the 9-year-old boy who police said had been in the rear cargo area of the Nissan Rogue that flew off the Hutchinson River Parkway and into a tree around 12:30 a.m.

“The pain we are feeling words [can’t] even express and we wouldn’t wish this to happen to anyone in this world,” he wrote.

Smith, 17-year-old Anthony Billips Jr., 12-year-old Zahnyiah Cross, 11-year-old Shawnell Cross and 8-year-old Andrew Billips were all killed in the crash, according to the Westchester County Police.

One of the children and a relative.Anthony Billips made a heartfelt post about the loss of the children in the crash.Faebook/Anthony Billips
The 2021 Nissan Rogue driven by the teen was rented by a relative, Westchester County Executive George Latimer said at a press briefing.

It did not appear that the teen was speeding, Latimer said, but he allegedly failed to negotiate a turn in the northbound lanes of the Hutchinson River Parkway.

“We do not believe that speed was a factor in this accident,” he said. “The evidence on the scene indicates, but subject to final investigation assessment is that the operator was either distracted or fell asleep.

Children. Two of the children lost in the fiery crash.Faebook/Anthony Billips
“The Hutchinson River Parkway in that downhill grade and with that bend to the left in the area of the accident is not an area of the Hutchinson River Parkway that has frequent accidents but it does require a driver to stay alert to be able to move with the changes in the roadway.”

Latimer said he drove on the same stretch of road two hours earlier.

Police said a good Samaritan who witnessed the crash put the young survivor, identified by authorities as Abraham Billips, into their own vehicle and called the boy’s mother before authorities arrived. Police had not interviewed Billips as of Monday evening.

Westchester County Public Safety Commissioner Terrance Raynor said the investigation is ongoing and currently “not criminal in nature.”

According to sources and news reports, the passengers in the Nissan Rogue were Malik’s cousins.

“He goes to the mall,” the grieving dad said. “He goes to get his ice cream with his cousin. They go to the movies. They walk about the mall. They do what teenagers and kids do. “So that’s, it’s just, I didn’t know he was driving by himself.”

Zahnyiah’s mom, Nicole Cross, also shared a series of harrowing posts with pics of some of the dead children — writing: “Mommy loves you girls sooooo F—ING much.”

“Lord Jesus I don’t understand why you had to take our babies from us please give us the strength,” she wrote in an earlier post Sunday.

“Lord God these kids didn’t deserve this like why is this happening,” she asked. “I’m begging we lost five kids in a tragic ass accident and don’t know what to do or how to handle this God please help us.”

She linked to a fundraiser that by Monday morning had raised nearly $20,000 of its $50,000 target “to help bury our children we lost.”

“Please anything will help we just want to put our babies to rest,” she wrote in that.

Police said all five kids were from Connecticut, and school officials said they were such new arrivals in Derby that they had yet to be enrolled in the school district there.

It was not immediately clear where they were heading when police say the 16-year-old driver crashed.

“It’s the unimaginable,” said Derby’s superintendent of schools, Matt Conway.

“Having to now make arrangements for five of your children to be buried is a very difficult thing for anyone — one child, never mind five that you’re going to have to now make arrangements for,” Conway said.

Derby Town Clerk Marc Garofalo told Fox 61 that it was a tragedy that “leaves you without words.”

“My heart breaks for the parents of these kids and their families. It’s just such an enormous thing to try to comprehend,” he said.

Wrong-way driver in fatal NYC crash could’ve been in jail after earlier DWI conviction

The wrong-way driver blamed for a fatal crash on the Belt Parkway had twice been busted for drunken driving — and could’ve been behind bars instead of behind the wheel after a DWI conviction earlier this year.
Winston Ramdeen, 52, remained on the roads because Brooklyn prosecutors didn’t ask that he be jailed after a jury found him guilty in February of a 2021 wreck with a blood-alcohol level three times the legal limit, according to court records.
On Tuesday, police said Ramdeen was behind the wheel of a 2001 Infiniti QX4 on the Belt Parkway when he slammed head-on into a 2007 Nissan Sentra, killing himself and the unsuspecting 79-year-old driver of the other vehicle.
Both drivers were rushed to Brookdale University Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead, cops said.
“An innocent 79-year-old man was killed because the Brooklyn DA didn’t ask for the defendant to be remanded,” one law enforcement source told The Post on Wednesday.
“Do you think his family agrees with the decision?”
The deadly collision came just eight days before Ramdeen was scheduled to be sentenced in the earlier wreck after being found guilty of drunken driving at a Brooklyn trial on Feb. 16, records show.

In that case, Ramdeen was driving a 2011 Mercedes-Benz when he smashed into the back of another car in Sheepshead Bay on July 4, 2021, according to a criminal complaint filed in the case.

The other driver told cops that Ramdeen displayed “slurred speech, red watery eyes, odor of alcoholic beverage on [his] breath and an unsteady gait,” the complaint said. When cops administered a Breathalyzer, Ramdeen had a blood-alcohol level of .239, nearly triple the state legal limit of .08.

Ramdeen remained free without bail when the case went to court because the charge is not eligible for bail under the state’s controversial 2019 criminal justice reforms — until he was found guilty.

Brooklyn prosecutors said they still opted not to seek to have him jailed or held on bail after the verdict because he had consistently shown up for his court appearances and was facing little jail time — with sources saying the DA’s Office planned to ask for a six-month sentence next week.

Former Manhattan prosecutor Michael Bachner agreed that a judge would’ve likely declined to lock Ramdeen up on a misdemeanor conviction — nor is it common for prosecutors to ask.

But Bachner said there may have been options to keep Ramdeen from getting behind the wheel.

“I don’t know what the conditions of his release are,” he said. “But, certainly, conditions could have been set if he was released whereby he should never have been able to see the inside of a car from the driver’s seat.”

The Brooklyn conviction was Ramdeen’s second drunken-driving bust, records show.

On Aug. 29, 2014, cops found him behind the wheel of a 1993 Honda on 120th Street in Queens, with a flat tire on the car and stopped alongside another vehicle that was damaged, records show.

Ramdeen told police he had “four drinks of vodka,” and blew a BAC of .195, more than double the legal limit, according to a complaint filed in that case.

Charged with drunken driving, Ramdeen pleaded guilty to driving while impaired on June 15, 2015, and had his license suspended for 90 days and was ordered to pay a $300 fine, prosecutors said.

Wild videos captured the moments a deranged driver nearly backed into an officer, who was injured jumping out of the way, before plowing into an outdoor dining shed while fleeing a traffic stop in Midtown Wednesday night.
The chaotic scene unfolded after the driver of a black Cadillac sedan was pulled over by police on East 30th Street between Madison and Park Avenues just before 5 p.m., the NYPD said.
A police spokesperson did not immediately provide a reason for the traffic stop, but sources said the driver may have been pulled over because of a fake license plate.

Video of the stop, shared by CBS’ New York’s Alecia Reid, shows police officers yelling commands at the driver who suddenly takes off and jumps the curb, bursting through part of a restaurant’s outdoor dining structure, sending debris flying.

One person near the dining shed can be seen jumping into the street as the vehicle narrowly misses them.

The car swerves back into the street and, with apparently little control, continues onto the sidewalk on the opposite side of the street, video shows.

The driver slams into a street sign as it approaches an intersection, sending pedestrians who were crossing the street sprinting, according to the video.

The vehicle then sped off eastbound across Park Avenue on East 30th Street, the footage shows.

Another video clip from the street behind the Cadillac shows officers trying to break the car’s driver-side windows as the driver tries to escape tight traffic.

The driver smashes into another vehicle, then reverses hard, just barely missing a male and female officer, who had to jump a curb to avoid getting hit, video shows.

“Let them go!” one bystander yells at the police. “[You’re] going to get someone hurt!”

Another voice can be heard repeatedly yelling “shoot him” as the car speeds away with loud crashes audible in the distance.

The injured police officer suffered a concussion after he hit his head while jumping out of the way of the vehicle, police and sources said.

No other injuries were reported, cops confirmed.

A witness told The Post that he saw about 15 police officers rush to the scene and a number of cops run to assist the injured officer and pull him out of the street. The witness said the officer had a visible head injury.

The Cadillac was found later Wednesday night abandoned on East 31st Street near Lexington Avenue, police said.

The driver, who fled on foot, remained at large.
