Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) said Sunday that billionaire Elon Musk made a “terrible mistake” restoring former President Donald Trump’s banned Twitter account.
“As we showed in the Jan. 6 hearings, the president used that platform to incite that attack on the Capitol. His comments about the vice president ― his own vice president ― put Mike Pence’s life in danger,” Schiff, who serves on the House committee investigating the riot, said on ABC’s “This Week.”

“He showed no remorse about that. He continues to lie about his actions on that day,” Schiff added. “He talks about pardoning the people who attacked police officers and attacked the Capitol that day.”
Schiff also noted that Musk was going against his own claim earlier this month when he said he would not allow any suspended Twitter users to return to the site until the company had established procedures on how to do so, including by forming a “content moderation council.”

“It contradicts what Elon Musk said that he was going to establish a counsel to evaluate this,” Schiff said. “And further contradicts Musk and his claimed concern about bots on his own platform to subject the decision to a poll on the platform that could be easily abused that way.”

Trump was banned from the social media platform two days after a mob of his supporters violently stormed the Capitol in an attempt to halt Congress’ certification of the 2020 election. Trump had used the platform to spread lies that the election was “stolen” from him and encourage his supporters to fight the results.
Musk, who finalized his $44 billion takeover of Twitter last month, has swiftly implemented an array of chaotic changes to the company in his short time at the helm, including firing a large chunk of the company’s 7,500 full-time employees and ordering remaining employees to agree to do “extremely hardcore” work to keep the company going ― a demand that triggered a wave of mass resignations.
Though he originally pledged to establish a process for reinstating banned users, he reinstated Trump’s account after holding a poll that asked Twitter users to click “yes” or “no” on whether it should be restored.

NAACP Calls for Companies to ‘Immediately Pause All Advertising’ on Twitter Over Trump Being Reinstated

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is calling for companies to “immediately pause all advertising” on Twitter in response to former President Donald Trump being reinstated.

Musk polled users and had over 15,000,000 votes before deciding to reinstate Trump.
A 51.8 percent majority of users voted to reinstate the former president’s account.
“The people have spoken. Trump will be reinstated,” Musk tweeted. “Vox Populi, Vox Dei,” which translates to “the voice of the people is the voice of God.”
Trump’s account was active shortly after his tweet.

NAACP president Derrick Johnson had a total meltdown over the news — accusing Musk of “failing our democracy.”
“You are failing our democracy. Your garbage poll means nothing,” Johnson tweeted. “Did people outside the US vote? Did you reach out to marginalized communities—the targets of Trump’s rhetoric—for their input? Your followers don’t represent America. If you run Twitter like this, God help us all.”

In a subsequent tweet, Johnson wrote, “Any advertiser still funding Twitter should immediately pause all advertising now.”

Trump has not yet tweeted from his newly restored account and has previously said he plans to remain on his platform Truth Social.
Musk had not responded to Johnson’s tantrum at the time of publishing.

App Store 'Gatekeepers' Urged To Deplatform "Dangerous" Twitter Itself

App store ‘gatekeepers’ Apple, Google Play and Amazon could all decide to deplatform Twitter itself following new owner Elon Musk’s commitment to free speech, according to a report.

Speculation over app stores potentially targeting Twitter intensified after Apple executive Phil Schiller deactivated his Twitter account for no apparent reason days after Donald Trump was restored to the platform.
Twitter users also noticed that the official Apple account itself had apparently removed all of its tweets, although it was later revealed that this was nothing new.
According to a report by Fast Company, “Musk is playing a dangerous game that could spell game over for the platform he just bought” by his supposed failure to moderate impose stringent moderation.
“Musk’s platforming of hateful content could get Twitter itself deplatformed,” writes Clint Rainey, adding that the company could be on a “collision course” with app store “gatekeepers.”
Rainey and his ilk are mad that Musk has culled the number of “moderators employed to track harmful content and enforce Twitter’s rules against it.”
Showcasing again how journalists now weaponize their platforms to try to chill free speech, Fast Company contacted Apple, Google and Amazon to ask them if they planned to deplatform the Twitter app itself, but none responded.
The article notes how both Parler and Truth Social were at one stage banned from app stores before they were forced to agree to more draconian moderation policies.
While it’s incredibly unlikely that the Twitter app itself would ever be deplatformed, the ‘gatekeepers’ could follow the example of advertisers by putting pressure on Musk to impose tighter censorship, therefore derailing the billionaire’s stated goal to “free the bird” and restore true freedom of speech.
Given that Apple is also likely to take a large cut of Twitter’s new $8 subscription service, a financial motive is also in place to maintain a good relationship with Musk.
Much of the hysteria seems to be based around Musk allowing accounts that had been unfairly banned or suspended on the platform, such as those operated by the Babylon Bee and Jordan Peterson, to return.
Trump himself returning to the platform, despite insisting he has no plans to actually use his account again, has also instilled terror into censorious leftists who fear they are losing power over the ability to shut down adversarial voices.

Former Twitter exec, Vijaya Gadde played a key role in suppressing Hunter Biden story a year earlier

She was appointed adviser to President Biden’s DHS in 2021

Twitter owner Elon Musk has revealed that under the previous management regime, former Twitter Legal, Policy and Trust & Safety Lead, Vijaya Gadde, played a key role in censoring the infamous Hunter Biden laptop story in October 2020.

Not only did Gadde play a pivotal role in censoring a story alleging that Joe Biden and his son Hunter engaged in a corruption scandal just weeks before the election that saw Joe Biden ascend to the presidency, but after Biden became President, his administration appointed her to an advisory role on a committee that helped shape the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS’s) “misinformation and disinformation” work that same year in December 2021.

The DHS’s misinformation and disinformation work has faced growing scrutiny and public backlash throughout 2022. Most notably, its “Disinformation Governance Board,” which was introduced in April 2022, was paused one month later, and officially shut down in August 2022 after raising First Amendment concerns and being threatened with legal action.

The Hunter Biden laptop story was one of the top stories of the 2020 election cycle and was heavily suppressed by Twitter weeks before the presidential election. Twitter blocked links to the story, locked accounts that attempted to share the article, and even censored memes and tweets that criticized the censorship.

This week, Musk shared documents about Twitter’s censorship of the story with journalist Matt Taibi who posted highlights on Twitter.

Taibi tweeted that the decision to censor the story was “made at the highest levels of the company but without the knowledge of [then-]CEO Jack Dorsey.” Instead, Gadde played “a key role” in the censorship. Taibi shared a document showing Gadde discussing the warning label that would be applied to the story when Twitter censored it.

On the day that Twitter censored the story, Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna emailed Gadde to let her know that the decision was “generating huge backlash” on Capitol Hill and that the censorship “seems a violation of the 1st Amendment principles.” He also suggested that by censoring the story, Twitter had made it “become a bigger deal than it would have been.”

Dorsey also forwarded Gadde a copy of an article by Taibi that blasted Twitter for censoring the story.

FjA9XTQWYAIdmQG-copy.jpeg

Taibi noted that employees inside Twitter were “struggling to understand the policy basis” for censoring the story and that the justification executives used to censor the story (claiming that it violated Twitter’s “hacked materials” policy) was just an “excuse.”

FjAzyaeX0AIsYd2-copy.png

In one internal communication, Twitter’s former Vice President of Global Communications, Brandon Borrman, asked: “Can we truthfully claim that this is part of the policy?”

FjA02YIWQAElTqy.png

One former Twitter employee told Taibi that “everyone knew this was fucked” after Twitter started censoring the story.

In addition to playing a key role in the censorship of the Hunter Biden laptop story, Gadde also reportedly played a key role in banning former President Donald Trump from Twitter.

Elon Musk has slammed journalists who are criticizing Matt Taibbi for releasing documents about Twitter's suppression of the Hunter Biden laptop story.
In a Twitter Spaces call on Saturday, the 51-year-old billionaire said reporters who are smearing Taibbi for revealing how the social media giant took down tweets about Biden's laptop should 'look in the mirror' and confront their own deceitfulness to 'the American people,' saying they were 'not being truthful' about the story.
Taibbi, 52, has faced backlash from journalists — primarily from MSNBC — trashing his ethics and standards since his exposé revealing how Twitter executives were urged by Biden staff to delete tweets relating to the damaging contents of Hunter Biden's laptop.
Many of the tweets disparaging the American author repeated the same themes, claiming he was just doing public relations for the world's richest man and did not understand limitations to the First Amendment, Mediaite reports.
But in his Twitter Spaces call on Saturday, Musk said he has 'read hardly any of the Twitter files' as he is focused on 'just getting Twitter healthy.'
Instead, Musk said, he left it up to Taibbi and journalist Bari Weiss to reveal what they thought the American public should know, according to Mediaite reports, indicating he told the journalists to expose whatever they thought was of public interest.

Then on Friday, Taibbi detailed how Twitter staff discussed censoring a New York Post story about Hunter Biden's laptop, even alluding to requests from Biden's team to do so.
'Twitter took extraordinary steps to suppress the story, removing links and posting warnings that it may be 'unsafe,' Taibbi wrote. 'They even blocked its transmission via direct message, a tool hitherto reserved for extreme cases, e.g. child pornography.'
Notably, in one exchange a Twitter executive emailed another a list of tweets with the instruction, 'More to review from the Biden team.'
The other executive responded: 'handled these'.
But many woke journalists slammed Taibbi, a former Rolling Stone politics correspondent, for releasing the documents, saying he did not understand journalistic ethics — while others said he was simply doing public relations for the world's richest man.
'Imagine volunteering to do online PR work for the world's richest man on a Friday night, in service of nakedly and cynically right-wing narratives, and then pretending you're speaking truth to power,' MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan wrote.
'Watching some of the most famous, most powerful and richest men red-pill themselves into disaster. Pretty wild!' his colleague Chris Hayes added.
When asked about this backlash by podcaster Clayton Morris during the Twitter Spaces call on Saturday, Musk said he thought journalists disparaging Taibbi should do some self-refection.
'Are you surprised at all about the blowback against Matt Taibbi over the past 24 hours?' Morris asked.
'A number of liberal news organizations, a lot of liberal news reporters came out and really slammed Matt Taibbi, which was really shocking,' he noted. 'What was your response to that?'
'Well, I think those people should be looking in the mirror and wondering why they were deceptive. Why did they deceive the American public?' Musk replied.
'And instead of trying to redirect blame to Matt Taibbi, accepting some responsibility themselves to not being truthful to the American public.'

Musk's response came the same day he attacked the New York Times for not covering the story, saying it is an 'unregistered lobbying firm for far-left politicians.'
Other left-leaning outlets including CBS News, ABC and The Washington Post are also yet to cover the 'Twitter Files', despite their contents causing a sensation among American conservatives and free-speech advocates.
Publications that have covered the story include POLITICO, NBC and CNN, though the latter dampened the news by suggesting the leaked emails 'corroborated what was already known about the incident'.
The Daily Beast echoed that sentiment but discussed the Twitter Files in a story headlined: ''Deeply Underwhelmed': Right-Wingers on Musk's Overhyped 'Twitter Files.''

But the files actually proved that Joe Biden's 2020 campaign instructed Twitter to delete pictures showing Hunter Biden naked and smoking crack.
It showed that in one email, sent ten days after The New York Post first broke the laptop story on October 14 of that year, Twitter staffers were asked to 'review' five tweets deemed problematic by 'the Biden team.'
'More to review from the Biden team,' that staffer's redacted correspondence read - garnering a reply hours later from another Twitter employee - one that assured the worker the task had been 'handled.'
That same day, another email reveals that there was an additional complaint from the DNC and two more tweets were deleted.
It is not clear from the leaked emails what the deleted tweets were about, however Washington Free Beacon investigative reporter Andrew Kerr said he had discovered the contents of several of the tweets.
He said three of the tweets the Biden camp demanded be deleted contained 'Hunter Biden porn' and photos of Biden's genitalia, from the laptop.
He claims one of the tweets requested to be deleted by the DNC was from actor James Woods and was about Hunter smoking crack and a committing a sex act.
And he says the second tweet was a link to Hunter Biden weighing and using drugs, and another link to a Hunter Biden sex tape.

The president is now facing mounting political pressure to address why his campaign ordered Twitter staffers to pull tweets they seemingly deemed problematic - when they had only appeared to discuss the contents of the laptop.
'I've pulled web archives of 3 of these tweets,' Kerr, who has held bylines for both The Washington Examiner and The Daily Caller, wrote in the first of two replies to the slew of posts on Musk's profile, which were reshared by the mogul after being posted in succession by independent journalist Matt Taibbi.
'All three are homemade Hunter Biden porn and Hunter Biden dick pics pulled from his laptop,' Kerr said of the three of the five posts confirmed to be sent from the Biden campaign on October 24, 2020.
'These tweets don't contain any info on Hunter's business dealings. Just porn,' Kerr continued. 'Can't immediately find archives of the other 2 tweets.'
He went on to add of the second string of unconfirmed posts -one of which was shared by since suspended user @stephen_liuhuan, and the other Woods - 'The Stephen_liuhuan tweet was a link to Hunter Biden weighing and using drugs, and another link to a Hunter Biden sex tape.'
'The James Wood tweet,' he revealed, 'is Hunter Biden smoking crack and getting a foot job.'
On Friday night, journalist Matt Taibbi live tweeted (above) the proof of what many people have long suspected.

Former President Donald Trump has now suggested that these documents give new credence to his claims that the Democratic Party conspired against him during the 2020 election to ensure his rival Biden took the oval office.
'So, with the revelation of massive and widespread fraud and deception in working closely with Big Tech Companies, the DNC, and the Democrat Party, do you throw the Presidential Election Results of 2020 out and declare the rightful winner, or do you have a new election?' Trump asked his 4.68million followers on TruthSocial.
'A massive fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution.'
Trump, who recently announced a renewed bid for the White House, then proclaimed: 'Our great 'Founders' did not want, and would not condone, false and fraudulent elections!'
Amid the outflow of damning posts, Musk shared a similar sentiment, adding that the several executives actions - some of whom were identified and some left anonymous - should constitute a violation of the Constitution's First Amendment, if the Biden campaign played a part in Twitter's scrubbing of the posts.
The South African mogul at one point declared: 'If this isn't a violation of the Constitution's First Amendment, what is?'

The full set of tweets shared by journalist Matt Taibbi exposing Twitter's censorship of explosive Hunter Biden laptop story

What you're about to read is the first installment in a series, based upon thousands of internal documents obtained by sources at Twitter.
The 'Twitter Files' tell an incredible story from inside one of the world's largest and most influential social media platforms. It is a Frankensteinian tale of a human-built mechanism grown out the control of its designer.
Twitter in its conception was a brilliant tool for enabling instant mass communication, making a true real-time global conversation possible for the first time.
In an early conception, Twitter more than lived up to its mission statement, giving people 'the power to create and share ideas and information instantly, without barriers.'
As time progressed, however, the company was slowly forced to add those barriers. Some of the first tools for controlling speech were designed to combat the likes of spam and financial fraudsters.
The Twitter Files were shared by journalist Matt Taibbi, pictured, at the direction of the firm's new owner Elon Musk

The Twitter Files were shared by journalist Matt Taibbi, pictured, at the direction of the firm's new owner Elon Musk

Slowly, over time, Twitter staff and executives began to find more and more uses for these tools. Outsiders began petitioning the company to manipulate speech as well: first a little, then more often, then constantly.
By 2020, requests from connected actors to delete tweets were routine. One executive would write to another: 'More to review from the Biden team.' The reply would come back: 'Handled.'
Celebrities and unknowns alike could be removed or reviewed at the behest of a political party: Both parties had access to these tools. For instance, in 2020, requests from both the Trump White House and the Biden campaign were received and honored.
However: This system wasn't balanced. It was based on contacts. Because Twitter was and is overwhelmingly staffed by people of one political orientation, there were more channels, more ways to complain, open to the left (well, Democrats) than the right.
The resulting slant in content moderation decisions is visible in the documents you're about to read. However, it's also the assessment of multiple current and former high-level executives.
Okay, there was more throat-clearing about the process, but screw it, let's jump forward.
The Twitter Files, Part One: How and Why Twitter Blocked the Hunter Biden Laptop Story.
On October 14, 2020, the New York Post published BIDEN SECRET EMAILS, an expose based on the contents of Hunter Biden's abandoned laptop:
Twitter took extraordinary steps to suppress the story, removing links and posting warnings that it may be 'unsafe.' They even blocked its transmission via direct message, a tool hitherto reserved for extreme cases, e.g. child pornography.
White House spokeswoman Kaleigh McEnany was locked out of her account for tweeting about the story, prompting a furious letter from Trump campaign staffer Mike Hahn, who seethed: 'At least pretend to care for the next 20 days.'
This led public policy executive Caroline Strom to send out a polite WTF query. Several employees noted that there was tension between the comms/policy teams, who had little/less control over moderation, and the safety/trust teams:
Strom's note returned the answer that the laptop story had been removed for violation of the company's 'hacked materials' policy:
Although several sources recalled hearing about a 'general' warning from federal law enforcement that summer about possible foreign hacks, there's no evidence - that I've seen - of any government involvement in the laptop story. In fact, that might have been the problem...
The decision was made at the highest levels of the company, but without the knowledge of CEO Jack Dorsey, with former head of legal, policy and trust Vijaya Gadde playing a key role.
'They just freelanced it,' is how one former employee characterized the decision. 'Hacking was the excuse, but within a few hours, pretty much everyone realized that wasn't going to hold. But no one had the guts to reverse it.'
You can see the confusion in the following lengthy exchange, which ends up including Gadde and former Trust and safety chief Yoel Roth. Comms official Trenton Kennedy writes, 'I'm struggling to understand the policy basis for marking this as unsafe'
By this point 'everyone knew this was f*cked,' said one former employee, but the response was essentially to err on the side of… continuing to err.
Former VP of Global Comms Brandon Borrman asks, 'Can we truthfully claim that this is part of the policy?'
To which former Deputy General Counsel Jim Baker again seems to advise staying the non-course, because 'caution is warranted':
In one humorous exchange on day 1, Democratic congressman Ro Khanna reaches out to Gadde to gently suggest she hop on the phone to talk about the 'backlash re speech.' Khanna was the only Democratic official I could find in the files who expressed concern.
Gadde replies quickly, immediately diving into the weeds of Twitter policy, unaware Khanna is more worried about the Bill of Rights:
Khanna tries to reroute the conversation to the First Amendment, mention of which is generally hard to find in the files:
Within a day, head of Public Policy Lauren Culbertson receives a ghastly letter/report from Carl Szabo of the research firm NetChoice, which had already polled 12 members of congress – 9 Rs and 3 Democrats, from 'the House Judiciary Committee to Rep. Judy Chu's office.'
NetChoice lets Twitter know a 'blood bath' awaits in upcoming Hill hearings, with members saying it's a 'tipping point,' complaining tech has 'grown so big that they can't even regulate themselves, so government may need to intervene.'
Szabo reports to Twitter that some Hill figures are characterizing the laptop story as 'tech's Access Hollywood moment'
Twitter files continued: 'THE FIRST AMENDMENT ISN'T ABSOLUTE' Szabo's letter contains chilling passages relaying Democratic lawmakers' attitudes. They want 'more' moderation, and as for the Bill of Rights, it's 'not absolute'
An amazing subplot of the Twitter/Hunter Biden laptop affair was how much was done without the knowledge of CEO Jack Dorsey, and how long it took for the situation to get 'unf*cked' (as one ex-employee put it) even after Dorsey jumped in.
There are multiple instances in the files of Dorsey intervening to question suspensions and other moderation actions, for accounts across the political spectrum.
The problem with the 'hacked materials' ruling, several sources said, was that this normally required an official/law enforcement finding of a hack. But such a finding never appears throughout what one executive describes as a 'whirlwind' 24-hour, company-wide mess.
It's been a whirlwind 96 hours for me, too. There is much more to come, including answers to questions about issues like shadow-banning, boosting, follower counts, the fate of various individual accounts, and more. These issues are not limited to the political right.

THE TWITTER FILES: The Removal Of Donald Trump, Part 2

The third installment of Elon Musk’s release of internal Twitter communications is devoted to the days surrounding the social media company’s decision to permanently ban President Trump.

Yesterday, we detailed part 1via veteran journalist Matt Taibbi, which focused on the period leading up to January 6th, including details about Twitter executives regular meetings with the FBI and DHS.

Today, in part 2, Michael Shellenberger reveals the chaos that ran wild inside Twitter on January 7th, as the same executives took decisions into their own hands to reassure ‘a few engineers’ that “someone is doing something about this.”

The Removal of Donald Trump: January 7

As the pressure builds, Twitter executives build the case for a permanent ban.

On Jan 7, senior Twitter execs:

  • create justifications to ban Trump
  • seek a change of policy for Trump alone, distinct from other political leaders
  • express no concern for the free speech or democracy implications of a ban
This #TwitterFiles is reported with @lwoodhouse

For years, Twitter had resisted calls to ban Trump.

“Blocking a world leader from Twitter,” it wrote in 2018, “would hide important info… [and] hamper necessary discussion around their words and actions.”https://t.co/qaqklHOHjc

But after the events of Jan 6, the internal and external pressure on Twitter CEO @jack grows.

Dorsey was on vacation in French Polynesia the week of January 4-8, 2021. He phoned into meetings but also delegated much of the handling of the situation to senior execs @yoyoel , Twitter’s Global Head of Trust and Safety, and @vijaya Head of Legal, Policy, & Trust.

As context, it’s important to understand that Twitter’s staff & senior execs were overwhelmingly progressive.

In 2018, 2020, and 2022, 96%, 98%, & 99% of Twitter staff’s political donations went to Democrats.

In 2017, Roth tweeted that there were “ACTUAL NAZIS IN THE WHITE HOUSE.”

In April 2022, Roth told a colleague that his goal “is to drive change in the world,” which is why he decided not to become an academic.

Fjp6IM5UUAA7DO1.jpg

On January 7, @jack emails employees saying Twitter needs to remain consistent in its policies, including the right of users to return to Twitter after a temporary suspension

After, Roth reassures an employee that “people who care about this… aren’t happy with where we are”

Fjp7CcRUUAAxW1M.jpg

Around 11:30 am PT, Roth DMs his colleagues with news that he is excited to share.

“GUESS WHAT,” he writes.
“Jack just approved repeat offender for civic integrity.”
The new approach would create a system where five violations (“strikes”) would result in permanent suspension.

Fjp9GbyVUAA1-fx.jpg

“Progress!” exclaims a member of Roth’s Trust and Safety Team.

The exchange between Roth and his colleagues makes clear that they had been pushing @jack for greater restrictions on the speech Twitter allows around elections.

he colleague wants to know if the decision means Trump can finally be banned. The person asks, “does the incitement to violence aspect change that calculus?”

Roth says it doesn’t. “Trump continues to just have his one strike” (remaining).

Roth’s colleague’s query about “incitement to violence” heavily foreshadows what will happen the following day.

On January 8, Twitter announces a permanent ban on Trump due to the “risk of further incitement of violence.”

On J8, Twitter says its ban is based on “specifically how [Trump’s tweets] are being received & interpreted.”

But in 2019, Twitter said it did “not attempt to determine all potential interpretations of the content or its intent.”

The *only* serious concern we found expressed within Twitter over the implications for free speech and democracy of banning Trump came from a junior person in the organization.

It was tucked away in a lower-level Slack channel known as “site-integrity-auto.”

“This might be an unpopular opinion but one off ad hoc decisions like this that don’t appear rooted in policy are imho a slippery slope… This now appears to be a fiat by an online platform CEO with a global presence that can gatekeep speech for the entire world…”

Twitter employees use the term “one off” frequently in their Slack discussions. Its frequent use reveals significant employee discretion over when and whether to apply warning labels on tweets and “strikes” on users.

Here are typical examples.

Recall from #TwitterFiles2 by @bariweiss that, according to Twitter staff, “We control visibility quite a bit. And we control the amplification of your content quite a bit. And normal people do not know how much we do.”

11. “We control visibility quite a bit. And we control the amplification of your content quite a bit. And normal people do not know how much we do,” one Twitter engineer told us. Two additional Twitter employees confirmed.

Twitter employees recognize the difference between their own politics & Twitter’s Terms of Service (TOS), but they also engage in complex interpretations of content in order to stamp out prohibited tweets, as a series of exchanges over the “#stopthesteal” hashtag reveal.

Roth immediately DMs a colleague to ask that they add “stopthesteal” & [QAnon conspiracy term] “kraken” to a blacklist of terms to be deamplified.

Roth’s colleague objects that blacklisting “stopthesteal” risks “deamplifying counterspeech” that validates the election.

Indeed, notes Roth’s colleague, “a quick search of top stop the steal tweets and they’re counterspeech”

But they quickly come up with a solution: “deamplify accounts with stopthesteal in the name/profile” since “those are not affiliated with counterspeech”

But it turns out that even blacklisting “kraken” is less straightforward than they thought. That’s because kraken, in addition to being a QAnon conspiracy theory based on the mythical Norwegian sea monster, is also the name of a cryptocurrency exchange, and was thus “allowlisted”

Employees struggle with whether to punish users who share screenshots of Trump’s deleted J6 tweets

“we should bounce these tweets with a strike given the screen shot violates the policy”

“they are criticising Trump, so I am bit hesitant with applying strike to this user”

FjqXtNdVQAA2CfM.png

What if a user dislikes Trump *and* objects to Twitter’s censorship? The tweet still gets deleted. But since the *intention* is not to deny the election result, no punishing strike is applied.

“if there are instances where the intent is unclear please feel free to raise”

Around noon, a confused senior executive in advertising sales sends a DM to Roth.

Sales exec: “jack says: ‘we will permanently suspend [Trump] if our policies are violated after a 12 hour account lock’… what policies is jack talking about?”

Roth: “*ANY* policy violation”

FjqcwxDVQAAnwYh.png

What happens next is essential to understanding how Twitter justified banning Trump…

Sales exec: “are we dropping the public interest [policy] now…”

Roth, six hours later: “In this specific case, we’re changing our public interest approach for his account…”

FjqeXNQVUAAtbZv.png

The ad exec is referring to Twitter’s policy of “Public-interest exceptions,” which allows the content of elected officials, even if it violates Twitter rules, “if it directly contributes to understanding or discussion of a matter of public concern”

Fjqf8HBVsAAvhER.png

Roth pushes for a permanent suspension of Rep. Matt Gaetz even though it “doesn’t quite fit anywhere (duh)”

It’s a kind of test case for the rationale for banning Trump.

“I’m trying to talk [Twitter’s] safety [team] into… removal as a conspiracy that incites violence.”

The evening of January 7, the same junior employee who expressed an “unpopular opinion” about “ad hoc decisions… that don’t appear rooted in policy,” speaks up one last time before the end of the day.

Earlier that day, the employee wrote, “My concern is specifically surrounding the unarticulated logic of the decision by FB. That space fills with the idea (conspiracy theory?) that all… internet moguls… sit around like kings casually deciding what people can and cannot see.”

Fjqnid-UYAEqjSd.png

The employee notes, later in the day, “And Will Oremus noticed the inconsistency too…,” linking to an article for OneZero at Medium called, “Facebook Chucked Its Own Rulebook to Ban Trump.”

“The underlying problem,” writes @WillOremus , is that “the dominant platforms have always been loath to own up to their subjectivity, because it highlights the extraordinary, unfettered power they wield over the global public square…
“… and places the responsibility for that power on their own shoulders… So they hide behind an ever-changing rulebook, alternately pointing to it when it’s convenient and shoving it under the nearest rug when it isn’t.”

“Facebook’s suspension of Trump now puts Twitter in an awkward position. If Trump does indeed return to Twitter, the pressure on Twitter will ramp up to find a pretext on which to ban him as well.”
Indeed. And as @bariweiss will show tomorrow, that’s exactly what happened.
