Arrested: Derrick Nix, Black male, 48 years of age
On Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at approximately 2:06 p.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a bank robbery call at the Comerica Bank located at 2315 East Anderson Lane. The suspect, Derrick Nix, entered the bank, grabbed a customer, and roughly guided him to the teller station. He then demanded money and threatened everyone near him. Nix left the scene in a red Ford Escape with an undisclosed amount of money.
Robbery detectives quickly gathered video footage from the bank and released a description of the suspect to uniformed officers.
The suspect was described as:
- Black male
- Heavy build
- The suspect was carrying a backpack and wearing a pink shirt, a white tank top underneath, black pants, black shoes, a two-toned head-wrap, and two watches (one on each wrist)
During his arrest, Nix was in possession of illegal drugs and stolen cash from the bank. Nix spoke with detectives and made several admissions regarding the bank robbery.
Nix is a known robbery suspect who is currently on federal supervised release and has a history of armed robberies. Nix was convicted in Austin in 2005 for an armed robbery of a Wells Fargo bank. In 2014, Nix was convicted for committing two more armed robberies of banks on the same day (Chase Bank and formerly Capital One Bank).
