MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The last full week of April was marred by violence in Shelby County and particularly in Memphis.

FOX13 does not typically lump unrelated violent crimes together in our reporting. But, after such a week, the number of shooting victims illustrates the violence that has plagued our communities.

This graphic shows the dates, locations, number of victims and agencies of each shooting FOX13 has reported on since April 18.

Between 9 p.m. on Friday, April 18, and 1:30 a.m. on Friday, April 25, at least 36 people were injured by gunfire in 26 separate shootings. Fifteen of those people died as a result, including one of the two confirmed children who were shot during that timespan. That's an average of 4.5 victims injured in shootings per day. On average, nearly two people a day lost their lives to gun violence.

The largest number of victims in a single shooting incident during the week came on Saturday, April 19, when five people were shot on Mosby Avenue. A 52-year-old man died in that shooting, and a 14-year-old boy was injured. The act of violence occurred during a vigil where neighbors honored a community member whose death left the community shaken.

Two other shootings each left three victims. Those shootings happened on Friday, April 18, at the intersection of Lamar and South Parkway and on Tuesday on Cleoford Avenue. Two people died in the shooting on Cleoford Avenue.

Two people also died Thursday when bullets flew yards away from Booker T. Washington in South Memphis. Memphis-Shelby County Schools confirmed that those people were students at the school, though their ages were not immediately released.

The one confirmed child who died in the violent week died in a shooting on Grahamdale on Easter Sunday. Memphis Police claim a 16-year-old shot and killed a 15-year-old boy.

Of the 36 shootings FOX13 reported on during the week, all but two happened in Memphis. The other two were handled by the Shelby County Sheriff's Office. Those shootings happened Friday on East Shelby Drive and Sunday on Black Diamond Cove.

Thursday morning, Memphis Mayor Paul Young had this message for those people responsible for violence in the city. “Those that mean our community no good, I want to be sure they know this is not going to be tolerated in our city,” Young said.

FORREST CITY, Ark. - A man accused of violent crimes escaped from an Arkansas jail on Monday, according to Arkansas State Police (ASP) and the St. Francis County Sheriff's Office.

ASP said 38-year-old Christopher Davenport of Forrest City escaped from the St. Francis County Detention Center in Forrest City Monday night. He was in jail on multiple felony charges in connection with a shooting that happened this fall.

Investigators said Davenport, a trustee, walked away from the sally port while he was taking out the trash.

Detective Lieutenant Morris McNutt said the escape happened fast, and it was captured on surveillance cameras.

"Yesterday afternoon, around 6:21, Davenport was taking out the garbage. He kind of nervously pranced around the sally port area, then he left the garbage, and he left running," McNutt said.

Detective McNutt said it took a phone call to the jail to trigger a headcount.

"They came in and done a head count because someone called, inquired about him being out. Did a headcount and confirmed he was gone," McNutt said.

Davenport was a trustee at the jail, despite a long list of violent charges.

"He was in here for possession of a firearm, first-degree battery, criminal mischief, two counts of endangering the welfare of a minor, and discharging a firearm within city limits," McNutt said.

Court records show Davenport was booked into the St. Francis County Detention Center in September after a shooting at the Star One Food Mart in Forrest City. Now, multiple agencies are looking for him, but no tips have panned out so far.

"Right now, there's a round-up. We've got help from outside entities, the federal marshals and the state police," McNutt said.

The detective told the community to be vigilant but not fearful.

"Just be careful," McNutt said. "I don't think he's going to be a real threat to anybody right now. He's hiding, and he doesn't want to be found."

Investigators could not immediately say how Davenport qualified for trustee status despite the charges against him.

Anyone with information about Davenport's whereabouts is asked to call the St. Francis Sheriff's Office at 870-633-2611 or the ASP Troop D at 870-633-1454.

14-year-old charged with aggravated rape in school assault case, police say

FOX13 Memphis News Staff

COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. - One of the suspects in the St. George's Independent School sexual assault case has been charged with rape, the Collierville Police Department said Tuesday.

The suspect, a 14-year-old boy, has been charged with aggravated rape through Juvenile Court, according to David Townsend, the Assistant Chief of the Collierville Police Department.

Townsend added that the boy was transported by the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, but could not provide his name due to his age.

The sexual assault investigation began on November 5, when students told school officials about an assault that happened after hours in the school athletic building in early October. Initially three students were expelled from the school, then 18-year-old Bryant Swing was arrested on charges of tampering with evidence and a woman, Nakesah Rockette, was arrested on conspiracy and accessory after the fact charges.

Since that first report, another accuser has come forward, saying the same suspect also sexually assaulted her in September.

Townsend said there was no other information available at this time, but specified that the investigation is still open.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A search warrant executed in Olive Branch identifies the suspect and provides details on an alleged sexual assault at St. George’s Independent School in Collierville.

Bryant Swing Jr., 18, is named as the suspect in the documents.

According to detectives with the Olive Branch Police Department, the alleged victim, a girl under 18, said another person coerced her to meet Swing in a back hallway at the school’s fieldhouse on Oct. 8, sometime between 5:30 and 7 p.m.

She said Swing pulled her into an unoccupied office and attempted to coerce her to perform oral sex against her will. The victim also said Swing attempted to remove her clothes, and she believed there were other students outside acting as lookouts.

Swing “pulled out his phone and began setting timers, trying to convince the victim to perform the act for the time he set,” the victim told police.

When she was able to leave the office, she says she saw two males clapping in the hallway outside the coach’s office.

Investigators said surveillance shows the victim passively resisting Swing and shaking her head no before walking toward the office with Swing. They said the video also showed at least three other males near the office before and after the incident, and they believed they had electronic evidence regarding what happened.

A search was later conducted at the Olive Branch home of Swing Jr. and his mother. Police said they were looking for pictures, videos, or other digital evidence related to the alleged crime.

According to an incident report, Olive Branch Police went to Swing’s home to obtain a cell phone, but were given the wrong one.

Police said they returned the next day with a warrant and located three iPhones, two Motorola phones, one MacBook, one Lenovo laptop, an Apple Watch, and a phone case. They said one of the cell phones was an iPhone that appeared to have been intentionally damaged, with the front half pulled away from the back half.

Detectives said they also found marijuana on top of a cabinet above the refrigerator.

Swing Jr. was arrested in Olive Branch and charged with tampering with evidence. He has not been charged with sexual assault. Records show he was bonded out on Tuesday for $20,000.

His mother, Nakesha Rockette, was also arrested on a charge of hindering the prosecution in the first degree and conspiracy to commit a crime, felony, and accessory after the fact.

Swing’s father, Bryant Swing Sr., was booked in the Desoto County Jail on unrelated drug charges.

One of Swing’s neighbors told WREG he saw police at the home last week, but didn’t know what it was about. Another woman on the street with daughters of her own was alarmed by the accusations against him.

Last week, Collierville Police said a second victim came forward on Nov. 11, reporting a sexual assault that allegedly happened Sept. 12, and they were actively investigating the second report.

They said it appears both reported assaults are linked to the same suspect.

Second student reports sexual assault at St. George’s, 3 charged in earlier report

Wednesday, Collierville police said two more students attending St. George’s Independent School are currently being investigated following the two sexual assaults reported at the school’s campus, according to the Collierville Police Department.

St. George’s Independent School released this statement to parents on Thursday:

As we work to strengthen our community together, we want to keep you informed about the steps we’re taking to continue addressing the challenges outlined in previous community communications.

Under the leadership of Chief Operations Officer Rodney Bright, we are conducting a compressive evaluation of discipline, safety and security on our campuses. We are assessing every aspect of the school day-from before-school hours through evening activities-and will implement any necessary adjustments to staffing, scheduling and/or procedures to ensure our Gryphons are supported and thriving in their daily experience.

We remain steadfast in our commitment to building the best St. George’s yet, always keeping students at the heart of every decision. Your partnership is essential in this ongoing process and we are grateful for your continued support.”
– Head of School Luke Pruett.

“What is going on with our kids? What is going on with society? That’s what we’ve got to ask ourselves as parents. What if this was your child?” said Marie Pizano, former St. George’s parent.

“I want to tell the victim and the families involved for the victim that we strong for you, we care about you, we love you, and you are enough,” said Pizano.

COVINGTON, Tenn. - A gun deal landed three teenagers in the hospital with gunshot wounds and several teens and adults arrested, the Covington Police Department said Monday.

Around 4:30 Saturday afternoon, police said, officers were sent to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Tipton County after several teenagers arrived with gunshot wounds. Covington Police said their investigation determined that the injuries stemmed from a shooting on Wooten Street in Covington, in an area known as "North Subs."

Police said their detectives found the shooting stemmed from a planned gun sale involving several teens; a dispute during the sale escalated, leading to a shootout between people inside and outside of a car.

As a result of the shootout, Covington Police said, three teenagers were shot, one of whom was taken to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis for further treatment, though all of their injuries were reported as not being life-threatening.

At the scene, CPD said, officers found physical evidence to support the story, including damage to a car and a nearby home. Police said surveillance footage in the area showed them the make and model of the car involved in the shootout.

Covington Police said the suspects, one adult and five teenagers and their parents, were found and interviewed: As a result, the following charges were filed:

  • 17-year-old from Covington - The driver of the car, the teen was charged with facilitation of aggravated assault and reckless endangerment
  • 15-year-old from Covington - Aggravated assault, vandalism, and reckless endangerment
  • 15-year-old from Drummonds - Aggravated assault, vandalism, and reckless endangerment
  • 13-year-old from Covington - Aggravated assault, vandalism, and reckless endangerment

  • 23-year-old Markevious Nelson - Aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, possession of a firearm in the commission of dangerous felony, vandalism, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor
Police said two of the teens believed to have been involved had been previously released from Tipton County Juvenile Court to house arrest with ankle monitoring; two of the parents, 58-year-old Tammy Poole and 35-year-old Vanquita Taylor were arrested and charged with violating a juvenile court order.

"We realize the challenges communities have with juvenile crime. This is an example of juveniles with firearms which could have been fatal,"
said Covington Police Chief Donna Turner. "We are working closely with the Tipton County Youth Service Officer and will continue to hold parents responsible when they do not properly monitor their children's activities."

West Tennessee attempted murder suspect arrested in California, U.S. Marshals say

JACKSON, Tenn. - A man wanted for attempted murder after a shooting outside a Jackson family entertainment center was arrested in California on Monday, the U.S. Marshals Service said.

The arrest stemmed from an October 26 shooting outside the Family Fun Center in Jackson that left two people injured. Jackson Police investigated the case and determined Dureico McKinnie to be the shooter, the Marshals Service said.

McKinnie was charged with attempted second-degree murder, reckless endangerment, and employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, Marshals said.

The U.S. Marshals Two Rivers Violent Fugitive Task Force in Jackson said they were asked to help find and arrest McKinnie; they determined that he'd run to California, and sent information to their Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force in Los Angeles.

On Monday, the Marshals Service said, agents determined that McKinnie was hiding out in a house on Edgewood Street in Inglewood. He was arrested that same day.

"Justice has no borders," said Tyreece Miller, U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Tennessee. "We commend Jackson Police for their quick work in identifying the shooter and will work with our partners to vigorously pursue violent fugitives no matter where they thing they're safe from capture."

McKinnie will be kept in prison in California until he is extradited back to Jackson, the Marshals Service said.

Covington police chief reacts to arrest of five juveniles in weekend shootout

COVINGTON, Tenn. - Five kids and three adults are all facing charges after Covington Police said they played a role in a shootout over the weekend.

Police said the kids, ranging in age from 13 to 17, along with 23-year-old Markevious Nelson, are suspects in a gun sale outside of a home in the North Subs neighborhood.

They made the sale, and then it turned into people in two cars shooting at each other.

Two other adults, Tammie Poole and Vanquita Taylor, are facing charges of violation of a juvenile court order after police say their children were on house arrest for previous crimes.

RELATED: Three teens shot, multiple arrests made after shootout during gun deal, police say

Although there were no serious or fatal injuries, Police Chief Donna Turner said it should be a wake-up call for parents.

"If you come into Covington and you want to shoot back and forth at cars like it's a video game, t
hen there's going to be repercussions for that," she told FOX13.

FOX13 spent Tuesday in Covington. Crews found the street the shooting allegedly happened on and found a home with bullet holes.

"We were just blessed that someone was not killed in this gun exchange in this, you know, heavily populated neighborhood," Turner said.

She said all of the teens are still in custody, and two of them have been sent to facilities outside of Tipton County.
