CHANDLER, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) — One person is dead, another is hospitalized, and a man is in custody after an assault involving co-workers in Chandler on Saturday morning.
Police were called to the Intel Ocotillo campus near Dobson and Ocotillo Roads for a reported assault involving a man with a hatchet around 6:15 a.m. Officers arrived and found 50-year-old Derrick Lemond Simmons in front of the building carrying two duffle bags. Police say Simmons told the officers that they were looking for him.
When officers entered the building, they found a man who had died from blunt-force trauma injuries in the cafeteria. Another victim had non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital. “We do know that they were both employees here, and they were co-workers,” said Sgt. Emma Huenneke, the Chandler Police Department Public Information Officer.

Witnesses told police that after the night shift employees left, Simmons allegedly approached a man at a table in the cafeteria and hit him multiple times on the head with a baseball bat, court papers say. According to court paperwork, the second victim was sitting with the first victim and stood up to confront Simmons when he attacked that person, too, intentionally hitting them.
Court documents also state the victim was killed with a baseball bat, hatchet, and knife. “Regarding the weapons that were used, we’re not going to disclose that at this time,” said Sgt. Huenneke.
Arizona’s Family reached out to Intel regarding this incident and received this response:

“After a tragic incident at the Ocotillo campus this morning, Chandler Police are on-site and working closely with Intel Security as they conduct their investigation.”

Simmons was arrested and charged with 1st-degree murder and aggravated assault. He was previously convicted in 2001 for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

CHANDLER, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) — One person is dead, another is hospitalized, and a man is in custody after an assault involving co-workers in Chandler on Saturday morning.
Police were called to the Intel Ocotillo campus near Dobson and Ocotillo Roads for a reported assault involving a man with a hatchet around 6:15 a.m. Officers arrived and found 50-year-old Derrick Lemond Simmons in front of the building carrying two duffle bags.

Police say Simmons told the officers that they were looking for him.
When officers entered the building, they found Dan Foster, 49, who had died from blunt-force trauma injuries in the cafeteria.

Another victim, identified as 27-year-old Jaron Williams, had non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital. “We do know that they were both employees here, and they were co-workers,” said Sgt. Emma Huenneke, the Chandler Police Department Public Information Officer.

Witnesses told police that after the night shift employees left, Simmons allegedly approached Foster at a table in the cafeteria and hit him multiple times on the head with a baseball bat, court papers say. According to court paperwork, Williams was sitting with Foster and stood up to confront the attacker when he was intentionally hit in the back of the head by Simmons with the same bat.
Simmons then went back and continued to hit Foster, then switched to a hatchet to continue hitting him. After multiple strikes, he switched to stabbing Foster with a knife. Simmons was not injured in his attack and investigators found blood on his clothes and shoes, court papers say.
Police papers say they found a bag Simmons brought with him into the facility at the scene full of various tools he wouldn’t use for his job. On the day of the incident, he was scheduled to work in another building and had no reason to be in the same area as Foster or Williams, papers say. Foster and Simmons had previous arguments, forcing to two to be separated into different work areas of the company which investigators say gives them cause to believe it was a premeditated crime.

Simmons was arrested and charged with 1st-degree murder and aggravated assault. He was previously convicted in 2001 for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He’s being held on a one-million-dollar bond.

Dan was born on June 21, 1973 in Phoenix, Arizona to James and Denise Foster.

Dan's love was restoring vintage Cadillacs. His most recent project was a 1969 orange Cadillac Coupe de Ville convertible. This project includes restoring it from the ground up, including painting, sewing, and reupholstering the entire vehicle. He loved to travel, camp, and fish. Dan enjoyed going to local car shows and most recently attended the Barrett Jackson Auto Auction with his son. He was the travel planner of vacations for the family. Dan loved dogs and helping people. He would answer the phone any time of the night for a friend and stop on the side of the road for a stranger. One of his biggest wishes was to see his son, Landon, graduate high school and continue to college to follow his dreams. He had the ability to make anyone laugh and his sense of humor will be missed by all. He had a kind nature and a good heart. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.

Dan is survived by his loving wife, Claudia Foster, his son Landon Foster, mother Denise Foster, and sister Lilli Foster.

An Arizona man, Derrick Lemond Simmons, used a baseball bat and other weapons to murder and injure two coworkers in the cafeteria of an Intel building, on Saturday.

According to the Chandler Police Department, officers arrived at the Intel plant near Dobson and Ocotillo Roads at about 6:15 a.m. and found one person “who was fatally injured from what appears to be blunt-force trauma.”
The deceased has been identified as 49-year-old Dan Foster. The employee who was injured while trying to intervene in the attack has been identified as 27-year-old Jaron Williams. Williams was found suffering from non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital.
Police found the 50-year-old Simmons in front of the building carrying two duffle bags.
Simmons, was taken into custody at the scene and booked into the Maricopa County jail on first-degree murder and aggravated assault
