Speaker McCarthy, Who Promised Voters No Blank Check on Ukraine, Voices Support For War Effort: ‘We Have to Win’

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who promised America First voters that he would not back a ‘blank check’ for the war effort in Ukraine, voiced support for the Biden administration’s policies in the region and insisted “we” must win.
McCarthy’s comments came last week as he spoke to reporters at a meeting with the President of Taiwan. They resurfaced when MSNBC’s Chuck Todd played them during an interview with House Foreign Affairs Chairman Mike McCaul (R-TX).

Todd characterized the comments as a “shift” in the “perception of where [McCarthy] is on the issue of Ukraine.”
“I think what’s happening in Ukraine is an atrocity, and I think Ukraine – not just Ukraine, the world has to win there,” McCarthy said before referencing his ‘blank check’ comments.
“What Russia has done is wrong. And a phrase that I used, the ‘blank check,’ I use that for anything. Well, I look at every dollar of taxpayers that we would use,” he insisted. “But the one thing I know that, in Ukraine, we have to win, because it also would save Taiwan at the same time.”

Did McCarthy Flip on His Ukraine Stance Before the Election?

MSNBC’s Chuck Todd questioned McCaul about the comments and wondered if McCarthy (R-CA) had “reassured” Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that House Republicans “are not going to stand in the way of more aid to Ukraine.”

McCaul replied that McCarthy’s new comments on the Ukraine war effort are always how he’s felt on the matter.
“He’s always believed this, felt this way,” the Texas representative said.
“What’s happening in Ukraine will determine what happens in Taiwan and the Pacific,” he added, echoing the Speaker’s sentiments.

It hasn’t always been what McCarthy believed. At least, not according to his own words.
In fact, The Political Insider warned readers in January, in the midst of the struggle for Republicans to name a Speaker to the House, that McCarthy’s comments about ‘no blank check’ to Ukraine were a ruse and evidence that he “may not be worthy” of getting the role.
McCarthy announced prior to the midterm elections that when the GOP takes control of the House, Ukraine would no longer be the benefactor of a “blank check” from the United States government.

“I think people are gonna be sitting in a recession and they’re not going to write a blank check to Ukraine,” McCarthy said. “They just won’t do it. … It’s not a free blank check.”

‘Full-Scale Support’ For Biden’s Ukraine War

Republican lawmakers at the time backpedaled and McCarthy didn’t step in to say, ‘No, I said what I meant.’ In fact, reports surfaced that he had been trying to “smooth over” the comment.
The Political Insider declared this was evidence McCarthy “was talking out of both sides of his mouth” and perhaps unfit for the Speakership.
Journalist Glenn Greenwald on Monday blasted McCarthy over his recalibrated stance, which he describes as pledging his “full-scale support for Biden’s war policies in Ukraine.”
“Prior to the 2022 midterms, McCarthy saw polling data showing Americans were increasingly reluctant to fund the proxy war in Ukraine, so sent signals he agreed, saying he opposes a ‘blank check,'” Greenwald tweeted. “Now he’s basically saying: Oh that? That meant nothing.”

Public opinion suggests the American people are growing weary of financing Ukraine’s war effort.
A recent poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research shows just 37% are in favor of sending taxpayer dollars to Ukraine, while 38% are opposed. Another 23% say they are neither in favor or opposed.

Republican support for America having a role in the Ukraine-Russia conflict had dropped from 35% the previous year to 17%.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell responded by saying that while he’s “sorry public opinion is sliding,” the war effort in Ukraine and America’s continued support is “enormously important.”
How important? “The single most important event going on in the world right now,” says McConnell.
Now, McCarthy is echoing those sentiments by saying, “We have to win.”
POLL: Do you think the new GOP House will continue sending blank checks to Ukraine?

Yes, they will

No, they won't

They will still send lots of money, but slightly less than before

Does he sound closer to McConnell in his thinking or the staunch anti-war, America First conservative he sold you on while trying to earn the Speaker’s gavel?

It has just been announced that the United States is going to give yet another $1.2 billion in funding to the war effort in Ukraine.
America is facing massive economic problems at home, but the Biden administration just can’t stop shoveling massive amounts of cash into Ukraine.
There seems to be no end to this.

Breitbart News reports:

More Money! U.S. to Hand Over Another $1.2 Billion in Aid to Ukraine: Report
The Biden administration is set to announce another $1.2 billion in military aid to Ukraine, it is claimed.
The package is said to be valued at $1.2 billion. It will reportedly be used to purchase various air defence equipment for the country, alongside more ammo for artillery and rocket systems.
According to a report by the Associated Press, the Joe Biden administration could announce the newest batch of military funding as early as Tuesday, with the package set to coincide with a Ukrainian counteroffensive against invading Russian forces.

It will bring the U.S.’s total military aid contribution to Ukraine to $36.9 billion since the war began, with the country having already announced multiple separate munitions packages valued at well over $1 billion dollars just last month.
Unlike many previous American donations, however, the equipment being sent east by the Democrat government as part of this package will reportedly not be sourced from existing Pentagon munitions stocks.
Instead, the federal government will reportedly use taxpayer dollars to purchase brand-new equipment from various defence contractors, which will then be delivered to Ukraine over the coming months and years.
This is not sustainable and everyone knows it.

It just never ends.
The Biden administration appears to care more about the well-being of Ukraine than America.

The Mess that Nuland Made: The Consequences of Ukraine’s “Regime Change”

Article by the late Robert Parry. His legacy live.
First published on July 14, 2023
As the Ukrainian army squares off against ultra-right and neo-Nazi militias in the west and violence against ethnic Russians continues in the east, the obvious folly of the Obama administration’s Ukraine policy has come into focus even for many who tried to ignore the facts, or what you might call “the mess that Victoria Nuland made.”
Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs “Toria” Nuland was the “mastermind” behind the Feb. 22, 2014 “regime change” in Ukraine, plotting the overthrow of the democratically elected government of President Viktor Yanukovych while convincing the ever-gullible U.S. mainstream media that the coup wasn’t really a coup but a victory for “democracy.”
To sell this latest neocon-driven “regime change” to the American people, the ugliness of the coup-makers had to be systematically airbrushed, particularly the key role of neo-Nazis and other ultra-nationalists from the Right Sektor. For the U.S.-organized propaganda campaign to work, the coup-makers had to wear white hats, not brown shirts.
So, for nearly a year and a half, the West’s mainstream media, especially The New York Times and The Washington Post, twisted their reporting into all kinds of contortions to avoid telling their readers that the new regime in Kiev was permeated by and dependent on neo-Nazi fighters and Ukrainian ultra-nationalists who wanted a pure-blood Ukraine, without ethnic Russians.
Any mention of that sordid reality was deemed “Russian propaganda” and anyone who spoke this inconvenient truth was a “stooge of Moscow.” It wasn’t until July 7 that the Times admitted the importance of the neo-Nazis and other ultra-nationalists in waging war against ethnic Russian rebels in the east. The Times also reported that these far-right forces had been joined by Islamic militants. Some of those jihadists have been called “brothers” of the hyper-brutal Islamic State.
Though the Times sought to spin this remarkable military alliance – neo-Nazi militias and Islamic jihadists – as a positive, the reality had to be jarring for readers who had bought into the Western propaganda about noble “pro-democracy” forces resisting evil “Russian aggression.”
Perhaps the Times sensed that it could no longer keep the lid on the troubling truth in Ukraine. For weeks, the Right Sektor militias and the neo-Nazi Azov battalion have been warning the civilian government in Kiev that they might turn on it and create a new order more to their liking.
Clashes in the West
Then, on Saturday, violent clashes broke out in the western Ukrainian town of Mukachevo, allegedly over the control of cigarette-smuggling routes. Right Sektor paramilitaries sprayed police officers with bullets from a belt-fed machinegun, and police – backed by Ukrainian government troops – returned fire. Several deaths and multiple injuries were reported.
Tensions escalated on Monday with President Petro Poroshenko ordering national security forces to disarm “armed cells” of political movements. Meanwhile, the Right Sektor dispatched reinforcements to the area while other militiamen converged on the capital of Kiev.
While President Poroshenko and Right Sektor leader Dmitry Yarosh may succeed in tamping down this latest flare-up of hostilities, they may be only postponing the inevitable: a conflict between the U.S.-backed authorities in Kiev and the neo-Nazis and other right-wing fighters who spearheaded last year’s coup and have been at the front lines of the fighting against ethnic Russian rebels in the east.
The Ukrainian right-wing extremists feel they have carried the heaviest burden in the war against the ethnic Russians and resent the politicians living in the relative safety and comfort of Kiev. In March, Poroshenko also fired thuggish oligarch Igor Kolomoisky as governor of the southeastern province of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. Kolomoisky had been the primary benefactor of the Right Sektor militias.
So, as has become apparent across Europe and even in Washington, the Ukraine crisis is spinning out of control, making the State Department’s preferred narrative of the conflict – that it’s all Russian President Vladimir Putin’s fault – harder and harder to sell.

How Ukraine is supposed to pull itself out of what looks like a death spiral – a possible two-front war in the east and the west along with a crashing economy – is hard to comprehend. The European Union, confronting budgetary crises over Greece and other EU members, has little money or patience for Ukraine, its neo-Nazis and its socio-political chaos.
America’s neocons at The Washington Post and elsewhere still rant about the need for the Obama administration to sink more billions upon billions of dollars into post-coup Ukraine because it “shares our values.” But that argument, too, is collapsing as Americans see the heart of a racist nationalism beating inside Ukraine’s new order.
Another Neocon ‘Regime Change’
Much of what has happened, of course, was predictable and indeed was predicted, but neocon Nuland couldn’t resist the temptation to pull off a “regime change” that she could call her own.
Her husband (and arch-neocon) Robert Kagan had co-founded the Project for the New American Century in 1998 around a demand for “regime change” in Iraq, a project that was accomplished in 2003 with President George W. Bush’s invasion.
As with Nuland in Ukraine, Kagan and his fellow neocons thought they could engineer an easy invasion of Iraq, oust Saddam Hussein and install some hand-picked client – in Iraq, Ahmed Chalabi was to be “the guy.” But they failed to take into account the harsh realities of Iraq, such as the fissures between Sunnis and Shiites, exposed by the U.S.-led invasion and occupation.
In Ukraine, Nuland and her neocon and liberal-interventionist friends saw the chance to poke Putin in the eye by encouraging violent protests to overthrow Russia-friendly President Yanukovych and put in place a new regime hostile to Moscow.
Carl Gershman, the neocon president of the U.S.-taxpayer-funded National Endowment for Democracy, explained the plan in a Post op-ed on Sept. 26, 2013. Gershman called Ukraine “the biggest prize” and an important interim step toward toppling Putin, who “may find himself on the losing end not just in the near abroad but within Russia itself.”
For her part, Nuland passed out cookies to anti-Yanukovych demonstrators at the Maidan square, reminded Ukrainian business leaders that the U.S. had invested $5 billion in their “European aspirations,” declared “f**k the EU” for its less aggressive approach, and discussed with U.S. Ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt who the new leaders of Ukraine should be. “Yats is the guy,” she said, referring to Arseniy Yatsenyuk.
Nuland saw her big chance on Feb. 20, 2014, when a mysterious sniper – apparently firing from a building controlled by the Right Sektor – shot and killed both police and protesters, escalating the crisis. On Feb. 21, in a desperate bid to avert more violence, Yanukovych agreed to a European-guaranteed plan in which he accepted reduced powers and called for early elections so he could be voted out of office.
But that wasn’t enough for the anti-Yanukovych forces who – led by Right Sektor and neo-Nazi militias – overran government buildings on Feb. 22, forcing Yanukovych and many of his officials to flee for their lives. With armed thugs patrolling the corridors of power, the final path to “regime change” was clear.
Instead of trying to salvage the Feb. 21 agreement, Nuland and European officials arranged for an unconstitutional procedure to strip Yanukovych of the presidency and declared the new regime “legitimate.” Nuland’s “guy” – Yatsenyuk – became prime minister.
While Nuland and her neocon cohorts celebrated, their “regime change” prompted an obvious reaction from Putin, who recognized the strategic threat that this hostile new regime posed to the historic Russian naval base at Sevastopol in Crimea. On Feb. 23, he began to take steps to protect those Russian interests.
Ethnic Hatreds
What the coup also did was revive long pent-up antagonisms between the ethnic Ukrainians in the west, including elements that had supported Adolf Hitler’s invasion of the Soviet Union during World War Two, and ethnic Russians in the south and east who feared the anti-Russian sentiments emanating from Kiev.
First, in Crimea and then in the so-called Donbas region, these ethnic Russians, who had been Yanukovych’s political base, resisted what they viewed as the illegitimate overthrow of their elected president. Both areas held referenda seeking separation from Ukraine, a move that Russia accepted in Crimea but resisted with the Donbas.
However, when the Kiev regime announced an “anti-terrorism operation” against the Donbas and dispatched neo-Nazi and other extremist militias to be the tip of the spear, Moscow began quietly assisting the embattled ethnic Russian rebels, a move that Nuland, the Obama administration and the mainstream news media called “Russian aggression.”
Amid the Western hysteria over Russia’s supposedly “imperial designs” and the thorough demonizing of Putin, President Barack Obama essentially authorized a new Cold War against Russia, reflected now in new U.S. strategic planning that could cost the U.S. taxpayers trillions of dollars and risk a possible nuclear confrontation.
Yet, despite the extraordinary costs and dangers, Nuland failed to appreciate the practical on-the-ground realities, much as her husband and other neocons did in Iraq. While Nuland got her hand-picked client Yatsenyuk installed and he did oversee a U.S.-demanded “neo-liberal” economic plan – slashing pensions, heating assistance and other social programs – the chaos that her “regime change” unleashed transformed Ukraine into a financial black hole.
With few prospects for a clear-cut victory over the ethnic Russian resistance in the east – and with the neo-Nazi/Islamist militias increasingly restless over the stalemate – the chances to restore any meaningful sense of order in the country appear remote. Unemployment is soaring and the government is essentially bankrupt.
The last best hope for some stability may have been the Minsk-2 agreement in February 2015, calling for a federalized system to give the Donbas more autonomy, but Nuland’s Prime Minister Yatsenyuk sabotaged the deal in March by inserting a poison pill that essentially demanded that the ethnic Russian rebels first surrender.
Now, the Ukraine chaos threatens to spiral even further out of control with the neo-Nazis and other right-wing militias – supplied with a bounty weapons to kill ethnic Russians in the east – turning on the political leadership in Kiev.
In other words, the neocons have struck again, dreaming up a “regime change” scheme that ignored practical realities, such as ethnic and religious fissures. Then, as the blood flowed and the suffering worsened, the neocons just sought out someone else to blame.
Thus, it seems unlikely that Nuland, regarded by some in Washington as the new “star” in U.S. foreign policy, will be fired for her dangerous incompetence, just as most neocons who authored the Iraq disaster remain “respected” experts employed by major think tanks, given prized space on op-ed pages, and consulted at the highest levels of the U.S. government.

‘Totally Inadequate’: DeSantis Blasts McCarthy Over Budget Deal for ‘Careening Towards Bankruptcy’

Fiscal conservatives blast debt ceiling ‘sell out’

Worse Than Anyone Realizes: Eliminating the Debt Ceiling Is the Catalyst for Our Nation’s Demise

For the last two years, I’ve been watching minions of the powers-that-be to see when they would make their big move. They installed Joe Biden for a reason and it isn’t just because he has been the most compromised man in Washington DC for at least a decade. They needed someone who they could fully control with no reservations. If the handlers assigned to him by the globalist elite cabal told him to nuke Moscow, there would be Trident IIs in the air within minutes, no questions asked.
Knowing that since at latest the 1970s (and likely much earlier than that) the cabal has been pushing for a multipolar world ruled by ten regional powers that answer to centralized leadership, it behooves us to uncover their plans to eliminate America. A huge part of those plans include Modern Monetary Theory that would not only end the U.S. Dollar’s status as the world reserve currency, but would simultaneously propel multitudes of Americans into a state of complete dependency on government.
If the debt ceiling deal passes this week, it would be fairly safe to assume that this is it. This is the next big piece of the puzzle to take down America. To understand this, we have to examine the dynamic that’s now in play. The vast majority of people who are paying attention assumed that there would either be a debt ceiling increase or default. As it turns out, neither is the case. Instead of raising the debt limit, Kevin McCarthy and the Biden-Harris regime removed the debt limit altogether until January, 2025. Once this debt deal is signed, there will be no cap to how much government can spend.

RFK Jr Calls For "Mature Conversation" On Ukraine As Admin Is "Lying To Us"

BY TYLER DURDEN
WEDNESDAY, MAY 31, 2023 - 04:45 PM

Link: https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/rfk-jr-calls-mature-conversation-ukraine-us-lying-us

2024 presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has once again blasted the United States government for lying to the public and to the world about Ukraine, while calling out the Military Industrial Complex in particular.
It's not the first time. Earlier this month an avalanche of mainstream media headlines condemned his take when he told UnHerd the following: "We should have listened to Putin over many years. We made a commitment to Russia, to Gorbachev, that we would not move NATO one inch to the east. Then we went in, and we lied."
More recent speaking engagements wherein he utters unpopular truths on Ukraine have gone viral this week. In one of them, he tells an audience at a campaign event, "Our government is lying to us about it. The media is going on with the lie…It’s a laundering operation for the Military Industrial Complex."

Among Kennedy's chief talking points is that the country needs a "mature conversation" on the conflict, but that the American public is not getting that.
Interestingly, he said that while many Americans are moved by compassion for the Ukrainian people, including his son who actually early on went to fight within Ukraine's foreign legion, Washington has been deceptive in selling Americans on the billions in defense aid poured into the conflict.
"We were told that the reason we were going over there is because it was a humanitarian mission," RFK Jr said. "But then every choice that we made along the way, that's been about prolonging the war and increasing the bloodshed, and refusing to negotiate. If it was a humanitarian mission we would won't to terminate the war, to shorten it, and to reduce the amount of bloodshed," he continued.
He then talked about the "real reason" for escalation of the conflict seen in the rhetoric of Biden and some of his top officials as including regime change against Vladimir Putin, as well as weakening and exhausting Russia's military in order to prevent its effectiveness in future conflicts elsewhere in the world. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has long been on record as saying this is about 'weakening' Russia.
Below is an April speech that included similar statements by Robert F. Kennedy Jr...

"Well as it turns out, opposing Vladmir Putin has been for 20 years the principle focal aspiration of the neocons who were thrown out after the debacle in Iraq. And we thought they were all gone for good, but now they've all reemerged in the Biden White House... it's the opposite of a humanitarian mission."
He further described Ukraine as a small country which is now tragically being "ground into dust by the geopolitical ambitions of the neocons in the White House." Ultimately the Ukrainians find themselves stuck in the middle of a proxy war between two rival superpowers, he explained.
Among the more interesting of RFK Jr.'s remarks on the issue...
"If Mexico did that and then started killing – they killed 14,000 Russians in Donbass, the Ukrainian government – if Mexico did that to expatriate Americans, we would invade in a second," Kennedy said, adding that Putin "repeatedly told us: these are the red lines, you are crossing."
As expected, mainstream media sources have dismissed him as a "crackpot" for this analysis, including recently in The Daily Beast. At the same time, many such MSM publications are currently dying and struggling for readership when compared to a number of prominent and rising independent outlets.

Zelensky, Pentagon Acknowledge Counteroffensive Had To Be "Paused" Amid Losses

BY TYLER DURDEN
TUESDAY, JUL 18, 2023 - 04:35 AM

Link: https://www.zerohedge.com/geopoliti...ed-counteroffensive-had-be-paused-amid-losses

The New York Times in a weekend story admitted that things are looking grim for the chances of Ukraine's counteroffensive, acknowledging that President Zelensky had been forced to put it on "pause" at one point.
The story, headlined "After Suffering Heavy Losses, Ukrainians Paused To Rethink Strategy" still sought to put a positive spin on the dire situation for Kiev:
Some of the improvement came because Ukraine changed tactics, focusing more on wearing down the Russian forces with artillery and long-range missiles than charging into enemy minefields and fire.
But that good news obscures some grim realities. The losses have also slowed because the counteroffensive itself has slowed — and even halted in places — as Ukrainian soldiers struggle against Russia’s formidable defenses. And despite the losses, the Ukrainians have so far taken just five of the 60 miles they hope to cover to reach the sea in the south and split the Russian forces in two.

This after admitting that only within the first couple weeks of the counteroffensive Ukraine forces lost some 20% of the weaponry newly supplied by the West, including tanks and armored vehicles. The much-vaunted offensive had kicked off in May, but hasn't translated to any major gains.
"This week, Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, acknowledged that there had been a brief pause in operations some weeks ago but blamed it on a lack of equipment and munitions, and called on Western allies to quicken the pace of deliveries," wrote the Times.
The report underscored that that the Pentagon has since publicly acknowledged the "pause", but then added: "American officials acknowledged the pause and said that the Ukrainians had begun moving again, but more deliberately, more adept at navigating minefields and mindful of the casualty risks."
As for Zelensky, he said in Friday words to the nation that "We must all understand very clearly, as clearly as possible, that Russian forces in our southern and eastern lands are doing everything they can in order to stop our soldiers." He added, "And every thousand metres we advance, every success of every combat brigade deserves our gratitude."
Very quickly after the counteroffensive kicked off last month, he admitted "slower than expected" pace while also complaining that more Western weapons and artillery are badly needed.

The start of the counteroffensive some two months ago was accompanied by glowing Western mainstream media accounts of the rapid successes that would be wrought. Even before that, most accounts of the battlefield situation were heavily skewed to fit a pro-Kiev, pro-West narrative - but the reality has proven much messier and ultimately illusory.
