Jeancine Innocent
Mom Accused Of Violently Shaking Baby
Doctors Say 3-Month-Old Will Remain In Vegetative State If She Survives

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. -- A 19-year-old mother was arrested Tuesday on charges that allege she violently shook her 3-month-old daughter, causing serious injury to the infant.
According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to Jeancine Innocent's home at Pine Tree Apartments last Wednesday and found the baby motionless and not breathing in the shower. Paramedics arrived and rushed the girl to Broward General Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition.
Innocent told deputies she was standing outside the bathtub and holding her daughter under the water to give her a shower when the baby slipped out of her hand and fell on her head.
She said the baby cried for a few minutes as she dried her and dressed her. She said she dialed 911 when her daughter went limp and stopped breathing.
Doctors examined the baby and determined that her injuries were consistent with shaken baby syndrome and could not have been suffered in a fall.
BSO detectives said Innocent then admitted to shaking her only child and lying to deputies in her original account of the baby's injuries.
Innocent is charged with aggravated child abuse. She was being held at Broward County's main jail on $7,500 bond.
Attempts to reach the girl's father were unsuccessful.
Doctors said they believe the child has sustained permanent brain damage and will remain in a persistent vegetative state if she survives. Innocent could face murder charges if her daughter dies.
