Valerie Trierweiler to be witness in one of France's first gay marriages
Valerie Trierweiler, France's first lady, will be a witness at one of the country's first gay marriages as soon as the law proposed by her partner François Hollande comes into force early next year.
Miss Trierweiler, a 47-year old divorcee, said she would take part in the wedding of two homosexual friends, also friends of France's Socialist President, as soon as his controversial "marriage for all" law is officially legalised.
"I'm delighted to be one of the very first witnesses at one of the very first marriages for all," the Paris Match journalist told RTL radio.
Mr Hollande will also be a witness at another gay wedding shortly afterwards, according to RTL.
Miss Trierweiler's announcement came days after her Elysée predecessor, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, said she disagreed with her conservative husband Nicolas Sarkozy and supported same-sex marriage and adoption.
In an interview with the French edition of Vogue, the 44-year-old singer and supermodel said: "I'm rather in favour because I have a lot of friends men and women who are in this situation and I see nothing unstable or perverse in families with gay parents."
