Illegal aliens nabbed, will be deported

MARLBORO -- Two illegal immigrants working for a Home Depot subcontractor were turned over to the U.S. Border Patrol on Thursday afternoon, according to the Vermont State Police.

Sgt. Mike Sorensen said he discovered Jose Rosete, 34, and Jair Cuapio, 21, both of Tlaxcala, Mexico, by their broken-down van with Tennessee plates, which was partially obstructing the westbound lane of Route 9.

"They were having a mechanical
problem with the van," he said. "It looked like it had overheated."

Neither man could speak much English or produce any identification, which alerted Sorensen's suspicions.

"They didn't speak a lot of English," he said. "The one that did speak some English, he adm
itted that they both were in the country illegally."

After determining that both men were in the country illegally, Sorensen alerted Border Patrol officials and brought Rosete and Cuapio to the state police barracks in Brattleboro.

While in custody, the men told Sorensen that they had worked for a subcontractor for Home Depot named American Carpet. They claimed the carpet installer is based in Connecticut, Sorensen said.

"They were going to do a carpet installation in Bennington," he said.

Sorensen said neither man was forthcoming with how long they had been unemployed or who had hired them. In broken English, Cuapio told Sorensen that he had been in the U
nited States for nearly a year, while Rosete had arrived about six months earlier.

Sorensen did background checks on both men, but neither had any record in the United States. It wasn't i
mmed
iately clear how or where the men gained entrance into the country, he said.

Both men will remain in the custody of the Border Patrol until
their pending deportation.

Public Relations Manager Don Harrison of Home Depot's Eastern Division confirmed that American Carpet is a subcontractor out of Springfield, Mass., but hadn't heard anything about the company hiring illegal immigrants. He said Home Depot officials would monitor the Border Patrol's investigation to see what develops.

"We'll wait and see what the authorities discover," he said.

Calls placed to American Carpet and the Border Patrol on Thursday evening were not returned.
