Trenton Mayor Announces Curfew Following Series Of Shootings That Left 3 Dead, 4 Wounded

TRENTON, N.J. (CBS) — Some communities in our area are not only dealing with COVID-19, but also a new round of deadly gun violence. On Monday, Trenton’s mayor announced a citywide curfew from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. It comes after seven people were shot — three of them killed — Sunday in the city.

First responders were kept busy in New Jersey’s capital Sunday. Within four hours, seven people were shot during three separate shootings. Three of them were killed.

The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office identified the victims as 20-year-old Frederick Mason, 30-year-old Dabree Brannon and 24-year-old Quamierah Massey. All three were from Trenton.

On top of the violence, the city has a shrinking police force. The health department confirmed five police officers and three firefighters tested positive for COVID-19.

The city’s health officer says at least 15 first responders who came in contact with those infected were put in quarantine.

“Over this past weekend, a lot of young people came out, were congregating, violating the orders,” Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora said.

The mayor announced he’s expanding Trenton’s emergency powers to enact a curfew from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. That goes for all businesses, including gas stations.

“I’m worried for all of the officers and I’m worried for the officers and everyone in the city,” Trenton Police Lt. Peter Szpakowski said.

There are 128 positive COVID-19 cases and two deaths in the city.

The mayor wants curfew violators to be fined up to $2,000.

Over in Chester, Pennsylvania, more strict restrictions were also in place after a 7-year-old boy was shot and killed.

Gunshots rang out on the 2600 block of Swarts Street in Chester around 9:30 p.m. Sunday night. Seven-year-old Sinsir Parker was shot in his face and killed by a stray bullet, according to police.

“It breaks my heart,” Chester Mayor Thaddeus Kirkland said.

Kirkland says surveillance video helped detectives find the stolen vehicle involved in the shooting. The mayor announced that police will increase traffic stops due to missing taillights and license plate problems, in an effort to search vehicles for illegal guns.

The city will now also close all outdoor basketball courts to help with social distancing amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

Latest Shootings In Trenton Leave 4 Men Dead, 3 Wounded
May 22, 2020 at 3:09 pm

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A series of recent shootings in New Jersey’s capital city has left four men dead and three others wounded, but authorities do not believe the shootings are connected. The violence comes just weeks after another series of shootings over a four-hour period left three people dead and four wounded. Those shootings spurred Mayor Reed Gusciora to impose an 8 p.m. nightly curfew, and he announced Monday that the curfew would remain in effect indefinitely.

The most recent shooting in Trenton occurred around 4:15 p.m. Thursday, when a man was killed on the 900 block of Parkside Avenue and another was wounded. Their names have not been released.

That shooting came three days after two men were shot and killed in separate shootings. Antwuan Bowens, 44, was gunned down on Daymond Street, while Tayvion Jones, 18, was shot and killed outside his Oakland Street home.

The other fatal shooting occurred Saturday, when 38-year-old Robert Smith was killed on Daymond Street, not far from where Bowens was slain. Two other men were wounded in the shooting that killed Smith.

Motives for all four of those shootings remain under investigation.

Authorities: Gunfire Leaves Two 18-Year-Old Men Dead In New Jersey Capital City
August 9, 2020 at 2:11 pm

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say gunfire claimed the lives of two 18-year-olds in New Jersey’s capital city over the weekend. The Mercer County prosecutor’s office says William Irrizarry and Julius Vargas were gunned down at about 7:30 a.m. Sunday in South Trenton.

No arrests were immediately announced and the motive wasn’t immediately known.

The deaths bring the total number of homicides in the city to 24, far higher than the 15 homicides for all of last year and the 16 homicides the year before.

The Trentonian reported that city police director Sheilah Coley said last week that at least 11 of this year’s slayings involved personal disputes. Coley has said her department made 2,284 arrests this year and identified 47 “main players” involved with “90 percent” of the crime in the city.

“We are doing everything we can with the resources we have,” Coley said at Thursday’s council meeting.

Trenton Surpasses Record For Homicides Set In 2013, Mayor Says
November 30, 2020 at 7:45 pm

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey’s capital surpassed its record for homicides set in 2013 with the 38th and 39th slayings over the weekend, Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora said in a statement.

COVID-19 set the year apart, with high economic uncertainty, closed schools and police officers facing quarantines, Gusciora said Sunday.

“Youth engagement and recreational activities have grinded to a halt,” he said. “Every police officer who has to quarantine for 14 days is one less guardian on the street, a heavy blow for a police department that is already much smaller than it was just a few years ago.”

Gusciora singled out the supply of weapons used in crimes, particularly those from out of state. He pointed to the arrest weeks ago by state police and Trenton officers of two alleged gun traffickers pushing weapons from South Carolina.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, a fellow Democrat, has been vocal about trying to stop the so-called iron pipeline of firearms that flows into New Jersey from states with laxer gun laws along the Interstate-95 corridor. On Monday, he called the record homicide figure “tragic” during an unrelated news conference.

“It’s not a milestone that anybody looks at with anything other than a heavy heart,” Murphy said.

State Police Superintendent Col. Pat Callahan, speaking at the same event, said a law enforcement task force helped carry out the arrest that Gusciora cited in his statement.

“(That’s) eight brand new handguns that would have been on the streets of Trenton had that task force not been there as part of that violent-crime reduction initiative,” Callahan said. “It is a daily mission for us to make sure that we protect the citizens of Trenton.”

By the end of 2013, Trenton recorded 37 homicides, though the previous record was tied in August that year at 31. The prior record was from 2005.
