SAGINAW, Mich. (AP) --A 17-year-old and her mother face assault charges after police said the teen attempted to slash another student's throat with a utility knife in the halls of Saginaw High School. The mother is accused of attacking a security guard, police said.

Candace N. Sims of Saginaw was arraigned Tuesday on a charge of assault with intent to commit great bodily harm in the Monday attack on a 15-year-old student. The charge carries a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

Sims' mother, Wondolyn G. Martin, 42, also of Saginaw, is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. That charge carries up to five years in prison.

Both are accused of brandishing utility knives and also are charged with carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent, which carries up to four years in prison.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 25 in front of District
Judge Darnell Jackson.

Officers re
sponded to reports Monday of students struggling in the halls after Sims, flanked by her mother and Martin's 20-year-old daughter, used a utility knife to slash the 15-year-old, police said.

The injury was not life-threatening but required medical attention.

Police said the attack stemmed from an argument between the victim and Sims' 15-year-old sister near the end of freshman lunch hour.

The fight occurred after the three came to the school at the 15-year-old sister's request to speak with the principal, police said. They were leaving when they ran into the victim.
