This couldn't be because of the ethnicity of the students, could it?

South Island kids are achieving more at school than their northern counterparts, although the West Coast is alongside Northland, Waikato and Gisborne as the areas struggling the most, new data shows.

The Ministry of Education released regional data for early childhood education participation, national standards achievement, and NCEA level two attainment for the first time on Thursday.

It shows students in most parts of the South Island are achieving well compared to targets, while North Island areas are behind.

Otago, Canterbury, Nelson and Tasman all exceeded the target of 98 per cent participation in early childhood education.

Northland (92.1 per cent) and West Coast (94.9 per cent) had the worst results.

Similarly, primary schools across the South Island, barring the West Coast, did the best, with more than 80 per cent of students reading at the national standard level. The national target is 85 per cent.

They were also at or above the national averages for maths and writing, but all areas were well below the 85 per cent targets in those categories.

While Wellington students were achieving at similar levels to those South Island areas, and the Bay of Plenty is not far behind, some other North Island areas are struggling.

Northland, Hawke's Bay, Waikato and Gisborne are below the national average in all three subjects as is the West Coast.

Auckland schools are doing better than the national average in maths, with 74.3 per cent of students achieving the national standard, but are below the national average in reading and writing.

Schools in Taranaki and Manawatu-Whanganui were above the national average in reading, just topping 78 per cent, but below the average in maths and writing.

NCEA level two achievement at secondary school is highest in Nelson, which tops 80 per cent, with Otago, Marlborough, Auckland and Wellington all topping 77 per cent.

Gisborne (67.3 per cent) and Northland (68.5 per cent) were the worst achievers, followed by Waikato and West Coast.
The Ministry of Education is expected to release school-by-school data in August.

A quick look at the demographics will tell you why,The bulk of the kids in those areas are lighter coloured and going to school to learn, mostly with full belly,s

I don't think we need any special tribunal type of investigation to work out why certain areas on NZ are not doing better than others. We are constantly being given figures and percentages on many social issues throughout New Zealand... and then react as if we don't have an explanation, when in fact the reason is generally pretty obvious to anyone with a brain in their head. It is however not PC to tell the truth, and its better to come up with some other hypothetical excuse or reason for these anomalies that occur in these same regions time and time again.

Maories are just somewhat higher functioning jiggaboos, but that's it. Where there are fewer jiggaboos, it will be safer and the students will do better. I have had to drop classes in jr. high and high school due to screaming fecal-skinned, slit-eyed chimpanzees making way too much noise. No decent human can learn in such an environment.
