In a blow to 1850s fashion, Tennessee high schools now have the right to ban students from wearing Confederate flag shirts.

A federal appeals court in Cincinnati has refused to hear a case regarding a prohibition on the shirts at William Blount High in Blount County. That leaves in place a previous ruling allowing school administrators to restrict poor sartorial choices.

Two students who were into the shirts claim the ban violated free speech rights. The school, in turn, feared they would ignite some racial unpleasantries.

Yet a high-level source within the fashion in
dustry believes the case is much ado about nothing. "These shirts aren't retro in a cool, ironic Skynyrd kind of way. They have more of David Duke vibe. I suspect such a fashion faux pas would not get them invited to the finest parties, though they might be a hit at those soirees that involve a 12-pack of Natty Light out by the dump."
