Another 'Super Safe Sunday' ends in violence

Despite pleas from organizers for nonviolence, three people were shot and another stabbed as another Super Safe Sunday event turned bloody.

Local radio personality Jabber Jaws, who is also of Jabbo Productions, the group co-sponsoring the event with the city of Shreveport, asked the crowd to go home after the rap concert, held at the Louisiana State Fair Grounds on Sunday evening.

The Super Safe Sunday series is meant to get youths off the streets and curb black on black violence in Shreveport.

At least 5,000 people attended the concert, police said, though that is not an official count.

Jaws, whose real
r
name is Marvin Williams, told the crowd he wanted everyone to have a good time, but also
he didn't want there to be any violence at or after the show.

But about 9:30 p.m., between 30 and 40 shots were fired into a crowd in a parking lot on the north end of the Fair Grounds, Shreveport police said.

Muzzle fire from an unknown gun broke through the night sky, said officers describing the scene.

Some people hit the ground avoiding the bullets. Others ran away from the gunfire.

The three victims were taken by private vehicle to Willis-Knighton Medical Center, police said. Two were transferred to LSU Hospital in Shreveport, police said.

Their conditions were not immediately known.

Soon after the shooting, as the crowd filtered out of the Fair Grounds, people near the intersection of Greenwood Road and Jewella Avenue lighted fire crackers and threw them out of passing cars, causing others to run away fearing more gunshots.

About 10:15 p.m., police were called to the 3500 block of Hardy Street, about half a mile from the Fair Grounds, with a rep
ort of a stabbing. It was unclear how serious the stabbing was by press time.

Earlier in the evening, several fights broke out inside the Fair Grounds and at least four people were arrested, police said.

Super Safe Sunday has three scheduled events left this summer, on July 10, July 24, and Aug. 7.

On June 12, the first Super Safe Sunday of the summer, a 14-year-old was intentionally hit by a car after the concert. Police recorded five arrests and issued more than 150 motor vehicle citations at the time.

Suspect Arrested in "Super Safe Sunday" Shooting Case

A man described as the lead suspect in Sunday night's deadly shooting incident in Shreveport has been arrested after reportedly turning himself into police overnight. Few other details were released early Tuesday morning.

Late Monday, Shreveport Police Chief Mike Campbell said the city is suspending events known as "Super Safe Sunday", after a shooting that left four people wounded and a fifth person dead. Gunfire erupted as people were leaving Fairground Field Sunday evening, where the City of Shreveport and a local radio station sponsored the event aimed at curbing violence and giving young people a place to gather on Sunday evenings. A crowd estimated to be close to 5,000 had gathered f

or the event. The decision to postpone future "Super
Safe Sunday" events came after a Monday afternoon meeting of Shreveport Police Chief Mike Campbell, Mayor Keith Hightower, at least one city council member, and a representative from the radio station.

Shreveport Police say the gunfire broke around 9:40pm near the intersection of Greenwood Road and San Jacinto. "A group of people were walking from the event when one person in the group reportedly threw a bottle at a vehicle," said Shreveport Police spokeswoman Kacee Hargrave. "According to witnesses, the occupants of that vehicle then got out, retrieved weapons from the trunk and began firing shots at the victims," Hargrave said. Four people were treated at area hospitals for gunshot wounds. The fifth victim, 41-year-old Leonard Spratt of Shreveport, was found dead near the scene a few hours later, police said. The other victims were identified as Derion Robinson, 19, of Shreveport, Paigon West, 29, ad
dres
s unknown, Lugene Metcalf, 17, of Shreveport, and Andre Bolden, 20, of Shreveport.
Police say they believe at least three people fired shots at the group. They were reportedly in an orange sedan with chrome rims.

Chief Campbell said it is unfortunate that violence marred an event aimed at doing good. "Unfortunately, it paints a lot of people with the same brush which is not a fair thing for all the law abiding citizens who were there," Campbell said.

Shreveport police reported several other incidents that occurred at or after the event, including:

- The arrest of a man allegedly seen smoking marijuana in the parking lot.

- The breakup of four separate fights involving young females at the event. The fights were broken up, and the women were escorted out.

- A fight on the west lot after the event involving eight or nine males. One of the subjects was tased and taken into custody, along with three others. The remaining participants were t
old to l
eave.

- The seizure of 7.8 grams of marijuana and the issuing of 121 traffic citations by officers worki
ng the Greenwood and Jewella corridor.
