Three women from Texas attacked a hostess at an Upper West Side Italian restaurant after being asked to prove they were vaccinated, police said.
The tourists assaulted the 24-year-old worker at the neighborhood mainstay Carmine’s at about 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, cops said.
Sally Rechelle Lewis, 49, of Houston and Kaeita Nkeenge Rankin, 44, and Tyonnie Keshay Rankin, 21, both of Humble, allegedly punched and struck the hostess multiple times and broke her necklace.
The trio were all arrested on assault and criminal mischief charges, according to the NYPD
The victim told police she suffered pain and bruising after being attacked by the suspects, cops said. She refused medical treatment.
The tussle began after the Texans argued with the hostess over the existence or legitimacy of the women’s COVID-19 documents, police said.
No one picked up the phone at Carmine’s Thursday night.

A lawyer for one of the Texas women who allegedly beat a Carmine’s restaurant hostess in a dispute over the Big Apple’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate says the worker hurled a racial slur amid the “mutual combat.”
The accusation came as new details emerged about what exactly triggered Thursday’s fight — and a Black Lives Matter activist vowed to protest outside the eatery this week.
Justin Moore, the lawyer representing one of the accused Texas assaulters, Kaeita Nkeenge Rankin, told the New York Times that the hostess at the Upper West Side eatery used the N-word during the fight — and that she had a “very aggressive” manner.
“The hostess begins spouting out derogatory comments and speaking with two of the women. They claim that the N-word is being spewed out,” Moore said, according to The Times.
He labeled the altercation “mutual combat,” claiming the restaurant worker also generally talked in a “very aggressive” manner to the three women visiting from Texas.
“They also heard the hostess say, ‘Yeah, you guys can leave my restaurant,’ or something very aggressive like that,” said the lawyer. “When Dr. Rankin hears that, she turns around and addresses the hostess. She tells her, ‘This isn’t your restaurant. You’re just a staff member here. Please address us with respect.’ ”

But a lawyer for Carmine’s denied that race played any part in the conflict.
“Nothing about this incident suggests race was an issue,” the restaurant’s lawyer, Carolyn Richmond, told the paper in an e-mail.
“The pandemic has added a key responsibility to the host position — insuring the safety and health of all employees and guests by checking for proof of vaccination in compliance with New York City law,” she said.
New York City regulations require people 12 and older to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination to dine indoors at restaurants, bars and several other types of venues.
Meanwhile, more details emerged about the cause of the dispute.

While it was originally reported that the scuffle broke out when the women could not show their proof of vaccination or it wasn’t adequate enough, lawyers for both sides now say the issue was with the trio’s male guests’ immunization status.
Newly surfaced surveillance footage viewed by the Times shows the three women being brought to a table in the restaurant after documenting their inoculation against COVID-19. Then three men come to the restaurant to join the women, who were seated, but only one of the men was able to provide proof of vaccination, lawyers from both sides of the conflict told the Times.
The three women left the restaurant to join the trio of men outside — and that’s when the caught-on-video melee erupted.
Disturbing cellphone footage showed the wild incident in which the tourists allegedly attacked the hostess. In the video, one assailant appeared to slug the worker amid the chaos.

The three women were arrested and charged with assault and criminal mischief.
“The idea that anyone would become violent as an employee performs this necessary function is anathema to New York, the hospitality industry and New Yorkers in general,” Richmond told the Times, referring to the checking of patrons’ vaccine status. “As all of the women showed proof of vaccination, they were all permitted to enter and were in fact seated inside.”
But Black Lives Matter activist Hawk Newsome has announced that he is planning a Monday demonstration outside the restaurant.
“Those Sisters @CarminesNYC had proof of vaccination! That hostess used the N-Word and Threw Blows. @NYPD only arrested the Black Women,” he said on Twitter. “WE AINT HAVIN IT!!! #CancelCarmines We Are At Their Door Monday.”

UPPER WEST SIDE, Manhattan — A fight between a Carmine’s restaurant hostess and three women from Texas took a new turn on Monday, as Black Lives Matter protesters showed up outside the restaurant at the start of dinner service.
Justin Moore, an attorney for the women, accused the hostess of racism and lying to police about what happened last Thursday.
“It is unfortunate that Carmine’s and their hostess were able to lie to the police to avoid being held accountable for this hostess’ racism. She physically and verbally provoked confrontation, and then played the victim to criminalize these three Black women,” he said.
The fight between the women and the hostess was caught on video. The narrative from the Upper West Side restaurant was that the hostess asked for proof of vaccination and that’s what triggered an assault by the women.

The video captured part of the fight and you see one of the women punching the hostess.


Attorney claims Carmine’s hostess used racial slur before fight over vaccine proof

A spokesperson for Carmine’s said the hostess, who is Asian, never uttered a racial slur. She walked past the women, who were seated, and told them to enjoy their meal, the spokesperson said.


“None of the attackers offered any reason for their attack. None of the hosts – all of whom are people of color – uttered a racial slur. None of the attackers mentioned anything about race to our managers, staff, or the police who arrested them, and a Texas criminal defense lawyer’s false assertion otherwise is a deeply cynical ploy to try to excuse wanton violence,” the spokesperson added.


Amid the back-and-forth over what actually happened, Black Lives Matter protesters took over the outdoor dining area of the restaurant for hours Monday night.

Black Lives Matter protesters marched on famed New York diner Carmine’s late Monday — as the owner released new footage of the wild attack on his staff that he insisted had nothing to do with racism.
“Cancel Carmine’s!” chanted the large group of lying fu cking niggers, many wearing “Black Lives Matter New York” T-shirts, as they descended on the famed Upper West Side eatery late Monday.
“C’mon, black folks, you seen what they did to us,” one ringleader shouted outside the restaurant where three black Texas tourists were arrested Thursday for assaulting an Asian American hostess who refused to allow three of the group inside without proof they’d had coronavirus vaccines.
Bemused diners watched as the loud group continued shouting abuse just inches from staff as they crowded around the entrance, chanting “Shame” and for them to “leave,” videos posted on social media show.
The protesters accused the restaurant of putting black staff out front — even though the trio hurt in the brawl were also “people of color,” the restaurant said.

“She was nasty to black people,” he said, repeating the lawyer’s claim that the fight started when the hostess used the N-word, rather than her abiding by New York law and requesting proof of vaccines.
“I charge Carmine’s with trying to cover up their employee’s actions by using the vaccination passport as an excuse,” Newsome said.

He accused the restaurant of hiding surveillance footage of the attack — only to have owner Jeffrey Bank then release it.
“My team members work too hard to serve our guests, work too hard to comply with New York’s vaccination requirements, and still suffer too much from the attack for me to allow these false statements to stand,” he said of the racism claims.
The videos show six of the party arriving and being allowed inside — then each coming out after their three friends were not allowed in as staff complied with New York coronavirus laws, Banks said.

Banks insisted there was no proof of any racial slurs being used, noting that no such claims were reported to police — while also stressing that the attacked staff were black, Latina and Asian America.
“This attack was entirely unprovoked,” Banks insisted as he released the clips.

“At no point did the women mention that any of the hosts ever made a racial slur. Nor did the women say that to the police officers who arrested them. Nor did anyone hear any such slur.
“This is because none of our hosts — all of whom are people of color — ever uttered such a slur,” he insisted.
“When my employees mess up, I hold us accountable. But when our employees are attacked, I will defend them to the limit,” he said.

“We greatly appreciate how seriously the district attorney’s office is taking this attack on our staff,” said a spokesperson for Carmine’s. “Restaurant workers are part of our city’s lifeblood, and today sends a strong message that criminal acts like these will not be tolerated.”
The brawl occurred on Sept. 16 at the midtown Carmine’s restaurant when the hostess asked to see proof of having the COVID-19 vaccine. The fight erupted after two men arrived at the restaurant to meet the women but could not provide proof of vaccination and were denied entry, the paper reported. The women, who had already shown the hostess their inoculation papers and were seated inside, went back outside to meet their friends.
In the disturbing cellphone footage, the tourists are shown surrounding the 24-year-old hostess and striking her on the shoulder, neck and face.

The Upper West Side restaurant hostess who was attacked by several tourists as she enforced the city’s vaccination mandate denied using a racial slur during the incident — and called the allegation that she did “unbelievable.”
Three Texas women face up to a year behind bars after they were caught on camera assaulting the unidentified 24-year-old Carmine’s worker last month. The suspects, who are black, claimed the hostess called them the N-word during the altercation.
“I did my job in order to protect my co-workers and the other customers from the possibility of getting the COVID virus,” the worker said in a statement issued by her lawyer Aaron Mysliwiec.
“The accusation stating that I said a racial slur is unbelievable. I am a Korean immigrant, I was born in Seoul, Korea … I would never call anyone a racial slur. People lying about that is even worse than being physically assaulted,” the victim continued.

The 24-year-old victim said she was just trying to keep her customers safe.
“I want to make sure that neither myself nor my fellow co-workers are attacked again for trying to protect ourselves and our customers from the COVID virus,” she said in the statement.
