SPRINGFIELD - The suspect in a Friday night homicide may have fled the area, possibly to Mexico, police said Saturday.

Police are asking for the public's help in locating Arnulfo Beltranbarboza, 35, of Springfield, who is wanted in the killing of a 33-year-old Hispanic man. The victim was shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at 9:34 p.m., police said.

Authorities in California and the Border Patrol have been notified in case the man is trying to leave the country, police said. Beltranbarboza is considered armed and dangerous. He is described as a Hispanic, 5-feet-4-inches tall, weighing 155 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.

The victim's name was being withheld
until family could be notified, and police were unable to find relatives Saturday. The man was believed to be a Mexican national and police are hoping Mexican officials can help identify him, Springfield po

lice Capt. Richard Lewis said.
n
Police said the incident unfolded shortly after 9 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of an apartment complex at 1311 R St., where Beltranbarboza was living. The victim, who had lived at the same complex as recently as six months ago, was driven to the apartment complex to meet up with Beltranbarboza. An argument ensued and escalated into violence with several shots being fired, Lewis said.

"We know the two of them were acquainted and that somehow there was a problem between the two. The two of them had a meeting at that address and it wasn't the
best of circumstances," he said.

Police said a third man, who drove the victim to the scene and witnessed the shooting, fled the area alone in a Honda Accord. The car was later located an
d th
e driver interviewed, but he was not involved in the altercation, police said.

The driver was a friend of the victim
but it was unknown if he was acquainted with the suspect.

Beltranbarboza has prior arrests for theft, drunken driving and assault. The victim had previously been arrested on narcotics charges, Lewis said. Friday's shooting death was the second homicide in Springfield this year. In February, Tomas Ortega-Benitez murdered his ex-wife and killed himself.
