Yonkers man convicted of hate crime
A Yonkers man who made over 1,500 harassing telephone calls to teenage girls and women in Westchester County, pled guilty yesterday in Westchester County Court.
District Attorney Jeanine Pirro said Sattar Mohammad, 21, admitted his guilty to a felony charge of aggravated harassment in the second degree as a hate crime. This is believed to be the first gender-based hate crime in New York, Pirro said.
"This defendant intentionally targeted victims because of their gender," Pirro said. "He made thousands of harassing calls to women he didn't know. " When he made the calls, if a man answered, he would hang up. If a woman an
wered, she was victimized. "That makes this a hate crime and hate crimes will not be tolerated," Pirro said.
Mohammad is alleged to have made over 1,500 harassing telephone calls to teenag
e girls and women in Westchester. Mohammad called one teen over 800 tim
es. During the conversations, Mohammad told the victims that he was watching them and threatened to kill or injure them. He also made sexual and suggestive comments and animal noises."
He is scheduled to be sentenced in October.
